About Aivaras

I am a Bachelor’s music performance graduate with over 10 years of experience specialised in drums and I have been giving lessons in drums covering from the most fundamental basics to advanced concepts for over 4 years. I have had the opportunity to teach since before my degree started. I am DBS Checked! With carefully picked and personalised practice planners as well as reachable goals, my students are able to see significant results in short periods of time. I see teaching as a way to translate complex and overlooked topics in the most easily understandable and applicable ways so students can feel confident, motivated and eager when learning with me. I am well experienced performing live, throughout the years I was involved in progressive, metal, rock and fusion bands which helped me master the basics of technique, styles, reading music, learning music fast and many other skills.

Learn more about Aivaras

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

I have had a thing for music since I was about 7 years old - deeply exposed to video game music, my passion for all styles of music grew stronger over the years. I started playing the drums since I was 16 - nearly a decade up to this point.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

I discovered TesseracT and Animals As Leaders and The Contortionist very early when I began my journey on drums. Although their material is rhythmically quite complex, I didn't understand most of the concepts they've used at that point. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed listening to them endlessly. I keep coming back to their early releases and with more experience and better ears, I still hear and discover new things which sparks my passion!
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

Putting in the hours smartly in your instrument with planned and consistent practice schedules is not going to do justice on its own. The best way to learn is by playing with others! It doesn't matter how many online courses you powered through - you will always need people around you who are better than you whether these are your bandmates or teachers! For that, you also need to be a person where others want to be around so ditch your ego, don't be afraid to make mistakes and be honest with yourself and others!
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

I always thought that guitar is quite a difficult instrument to master since you've got so many ways and tunings you can play certain parts - it's probably because I haven't picked it up and started learning yet but it's on my list!
  • What are your keys to success?

Overused quote but it definitely changed everything for me: working smart instead of working hard. Meaning, you still have to work hard towards your goals but taking in consideration your body's and mind's limits is the most crucial tip I can give you. Scheduling and sticking to your goals over long periods as well as tracking the progress will definitely stimulate the motivation to keep your journey steady at your instrument.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

Steve Gadd, Pat Metheney and Danny Carey and the bar would be Ronnie Scott's. To find the answer for why, you would have to follow the questionnaire!
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

One day, in central London, Steve Gadd entered where I was working and I offered him a free beverage (why wouldn't you do that for your hero?!) and we started talking - he told me that he's performing that night at Ronnie Scott's and I told him that I'll check the tickets later and make sure to come by. The tickets were sold out and it bummed me out. The next day, I couldn't believe but he came again - I explained his situation and he managed to get me on the guest list! How cool is that? The show was amazing and we got to talk to him afterwards! It was an unforgettable moment that I will always cherish.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

No matter how technical or complicated you need to be when performing or writing - the music always comes first! I have learned that through years of experience of overdoing it and overcomplicating everything just because I could! Simplifying doesn't mean that you're average but developing my taste towards "appropriate amount" and focusing on the feel and groove led me to progress with focus, precision and purpose.
