About Maimouna

French isn’t simply a subject I learned, it’s one of the languages I grew up in.

Hi! I’m Maimouna I was born and raised across two countries where French is an official language, and French is my second native language. I’ve spoken it, studied in it, written exams in it, given presentations in it, and essentially lived my entire academic life through it.

From my very first years of school to university today, my education has been in French. I’m now pursuing my Honors Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences in French at the University of Ottawa, so French continues to be the language I use every day to learn, communicate, write, and tackle university-level science.

That’s why, when I teach French, I’m not approaching it as a collection of vocabulary lists and grammar rules I once memorized. I know the language as something that is actually lived. I can help with the French you need for an essay or an exam, but also the French you need to express an idea naturally, understand what you’re reading, hold a conversation, and eventually stop translating every sentence in your head before you say it.

I’ve also completed university-level coursework in education and teaching, which taught me something I care deeply about: knowing something and knowing how to teach it are two very different skills. I’m patient, I adapt, and if my first explanation doesn’t make sense to you, that’s okay I’ll find another one.

With me, you’re allowed to hesitate. You’re allowed to mispronounce something. You’re allowed to forget a word you learned five minutes ago. There’s no judgment here just practice, encouragement, corrections when you need them, and lots of little victories along the way.

French has opened doors for me my entire life. Now, I’d love to help you reach the point where it starts opening doors for you too.

About the lesson

Learning French shouldn’t feel like memorizing a million rules and hoping for the best. My goal is to make it finally click and maybe even make you enjoy it along the way.

I take the time to understand you first: how you learn, what’s confusing you, what you’re already good at, and what you actually want to improve. Whether that means speaking without second-guessing every sentence, writing stronger assignments, finally understanding grammar, improving your grades, expanding your vocabulary, or simply surviving French Immersion, we’ll work through it together at your pace.

Our lessons won’t just be me talking while you take notes. We’ll practice, have conversations, work through your school material, break difficult concepts into simpler ones, and focus extra attention on the areas where you need it most.

I’m a Biomedical Sciences student at the University of Ottawa with university-level coursework in education and teaching, and something I strongly believe is that there is absolutely nothing embarrassing about not understanding something. That’s the whole reason we’re learning!

Ask me the same question five times if you need to. Seriously. I’ll find five different ways to explain it until we find the one that makes you say, “OH… THAT’S what it means!”

I want my lessons to be a space where you can ask questions, make mistakes, laugh a little, try again, and actually see yourself improving.

My goal isn’t just to help you find the right answer today. It’s to help you become confident enough that, one day, you won’t need me to find it. :)
