About Lan

WGM Yao Lan is a four-time British Women’s Chess Champion and has consistently ranked as the No.1 female player in the UK over the past year. As one of the leading figures in British chess, she has represented England on the international stage, including appearances at the prestigious Chess Olympiad and as a medallist in European Team Championships. With over eight years of coaching experience, she is a certified FIDE Trainer, known for her ability to work with students of all levels—from ambitious beginners to competitive juniors and adults. Her teaching style is strategic, structured, and tailored to each individual’s goals, helping students build confidence and deepen their understanding of the game. Beyond her achievements on the board, she holds both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from University College London (UCL), bringing academic rigour and discipline to her professional chess career. Her dual background in high-level competition and education allows her to approach chess from both a practical and analytical perspective. As a strong advocate for women in chess, she continues to inspire and mentor the next generation of players, contributing to the growth and diversity of the chess community in the UK and beyond. Whether competing, teaching, or representing her country, she remains committed to excellence, continuous learning, and the promotion of chess as both a sport and an educational tool.

About the lesson

Course Description: There will be 10 sessions throughout each term, 1 hour every week. Fundamental (ECF 600-1000) How to avoid blundering Tactics: pattern recognition & calculation Opening choice & common opening tricks Basic endgames Intermediate (ECF 1000-1400) Tactics: pattern recognition, calculation & visualisation trainings Positional play introduction Opening choice & common opening tricks Intermediate endgames Psychology and strategy Advanced (ECF 1400-1800) Tactics: pattern recognition, calculation & visualisation trainings Positional play: evaluation, relative values of pieces, pawn structures & weaknesses Advanced endgames Psychology and Strategy Grandmasters’ Games Analysis
