About Charlie
Hi! My name is Charlie and I am a current Masters student studying at King's College London. I did my undergraduate degree in the University of Birmingham and finished my degree with first class honours. I put my academic success so far not down to my knowledge or understanding of my subjects (though it helps!) but instead to my understanding of how to write a strong, persuasive essay. In the humanities and social sciences, that really is over half the battle. As I begin the next step in my education, I want to share my experience and lessons with other students at any level on their own academic journeys, so they are fully equipped with the foundational skills to show off their true intelligence and vast knowledge. Other than experience I have gained from academics, my other relevant experience includes: work in my local MPs constituency office, educational work at a residential academic summer camp at Oxford University, and work in a Westminster-adjacent political consultancy.

Lesson focuses and structure: There is no set formula for each individual lesson, as I strongly believe in the importance of a fully personalised approach to strengthening a student's academic writing ability. I work closely with students to identify the areas that need improvement, and construct a teaching plan to most effectively work on those areas. That being said, below are some key concepts we can work on that often benefit students - Planning: The first step of any essay is to formulate a solid plan to inform strong writing when it comes time to submit. - Argument: Every good essay has a strong argument at its core. Formulating, building, and defending that argument is always a focus - Writing style: Making your points efficiently and convincingly. - Referencing: Ensuring best practice in how to reference properly and avoid any issues with unintentional plagiarism. Here are some techniques that have helped myself and others in learning. - Exemplar analysis: Valuable knowledge can be gained - Previous essay evaluation and editing: It is always beneficial to learn from mistakes made in the past.. - Writing exercises: I have prepared exercises in writing concisely, convincingly and eloquently - Proofreading before submission: I make no attempt to write a student's essay for them, but working together on the structure, tone and content of an ongoing essay builds confidence and informs future writing. A typical lesson would last one hour. About me: Having been in further education in essay writing subjects for nearing on 5 years now, I have extensive essay writing experience and results that prove my ability in delivering what Universities are after. I achieved a First Class degree at Undergraduate level, including a mark of 78% (High 1st) in my dissertation, and I am now in the middle of a National Security Studies Masters at King's College London, so my essay writing muscle is being well exercised!
