About Mcintosh
I have a Master's degree in Applied Philosophy and Ethics and a Bachelor's in Philosophy with a Minor in Psychology. This means I have written many, *many* essays, including my 80-page thesis. Writing is often overwhelming, and particularly so if you, like myself, have ADHD or some other set of difficulties. I remember many times sitting and staring at some essay assignment, feeling totally stuck and overwhelmed about how I could start the thing.
The writing tips my teachers were offering in high did not work for me, and I had to develop my own writing processes and tricks. For instance, if find myself stuck and don't know how to start my essay, I visit the relevant reading materials for the course and try to find something I *disagree* with. Then I ask myself "why do I disagree with this?" and come up with several reasons. I then have several points that I can argue in the essay. "The author says ___, however, I would like to argue instead that ____ is instead the case, for reasons ___ and ___." From here, I can ask "How might the author defend their position against my arguments?" and so on. Out of this process I would come up with enough ideas to create the essay.
More generally, this taught me that it is important for each person to find a process that works for them. Because of this, I try to tailor my approach to the needs and personality of each student and avoid a one-size-fits-all approach to tutoring.
If the tips and tricks you have been taught in school do not help you to write effectively, that does not mean there is something wrong with you. You simply need help finding methods that work for you. This takes some trial and error, but I can help.

Some tutors will spend all of their time explaining what is wrong with their student's writing. The problem with this is that it does not equip the student with the understanding they need to fix the issue. I take a practical and non-judgmental approach. I want to offer you clear tips and tools that you can use to improve your writing, rather than vague criticisms.
As a TA, I have the most experience with college-level essays; however, I can teach any age and I find it fun and rewarding to tutor children or high schoolers.
The typical tutoring session will start by me asking what you need help with. For instance, maybe you have not started because you are overwhelmed or unsure what to write about. In that case, we can look at the instructions and then brainstorm about what you might write about. Maybe you have written a few paragraphs or a rough draft, in that case we can look at what you have and see what you might do to improve the essay.

McIntosh (who goes by Mac) has been drumming since childhood and has been teaching undergraduates in their philosophy labs for several years now. He is an immensely talented drummer, writer, and teacher - as he truly loves his subjects of focus - and is a patient, compassionate person who happily meets students wherever they're at; Mac has taught and tutored students in drums and writing across a broad age-range (from kindergarteners to college students) and has gotten nothing but positive feedback. He truly loves helping people learn and approaches teaching from an egalitarian perspective in which he respects students and accommodates their unique learning needs. Mac is the best of both worlds - he is both incredibly knowledgable and an incredibly skilled and devoted teacher.
I know McIntosh as he is my daughter’s partner. I have had the opportunity to get to know him well. McIntosh is as earnest and respectful a person as I’ve ever met. He is smart, has integrity, has an open, interested, non-judgmental mind, and has a passion for teaching. He is also easygoing and has a wonderful sense of humor! He is a committed, devoted teacher who any student would be fortunate to have. I have the utmost respect for McIntosh and happily recommend him!
