About Lawrence
Korea is moving rapidly from a developing to a developed nation and I found that my teaching experiences there were not only relevant to English as a language, but also to English as a vehicle to global citizenship. I had the opportunity to teach adult learners from a range of diverse backgrounds, many of whom were working to improve their academic English skills. Prior to returning to Oregon, I spent three years working full-time at Chanel, a global company in Seoul, Korea where I taught courses in Business English and General English. Before that, I worked for the International Aviation English Service, in Incheon South Korea, for two years, where I edited curriculum and assessed the English speaking of pilots. I also worked for Berlitz for a year, where I taught English to global business executives and university students, developed lesson plans and assessed learning through the Berlitz testing method. Additionally, I taught K-12 English in a variety of settings from 2004-2012. Though my experience of teaching adults falls primarily into the category of General English, I hope to use these varied experiences to help students in the Academic English and General English courses at Superprof.
In my teaching, I engage in racial-cultural dialogues to explore the critical experience of ostracism and the idea of accepting differences without alienating people of different cultures and worldviews by developing new curriculum and embracing the use of technology in the classroom. I have successfully integrated the use of multimedia into existing lesson plans, and created authentic materials fusing technology into lessons. In using technology to maximize results for student learning, such as Comic Maker, News ELA, PowerPoint, YouTube, TV Advertisements, Windows Movie Maker, BlackBoard, and FluentU. For this purpose, I believe my task is to contextualize language teaching in culturally responsive and relevant ways while maintaining the goals of the student by including critical thinking, and social skills into each lesson.
Overall, I am academically disciplined, creative, culturally responsive, and flexible. I hold myself to high academic standards and have always attempted to achieve exemplary personal traits. I have a passion to motivate students to reach their goals. From my perspective, the most improvement in students’ English occurs when their instructor shows great energy and puts forth the effort to interact with them both in the classroom and interpersonally. I believe that I am up to this task, and I sincerely hope that my experiences will be a valuable asset to students at Superprof.

As a Korean American, and native English speaker, who grew up in Eugene, Oregon, I believe the most integral aspects of ESL teaching is the opportunity to open a dialogue about cultural diversity, particularly through language. After spending more than a decade in South Korea where I taught English in a variety of diverse settings, I came to fully appreciate how language is a reflection of culture. My experiences in EFL and my growing interest in research led me to pursue my graduate studies at the University of Southern California, where I earned a Master of Art’s in Teaching with a concentration in TESOL. This academic, yet personal philosophy is what inspired my application for the ESL Instructor position at Superprof. I believe my teaching philosophy is aligned with the program’s mission to create cultural spaces inclusive of diverse learners, perspectives and innovation in teaching. Given my tenure in the EFL industry, I have gained significant experience in developing materials, planning lessons and editing curriculum, and would be able to apply these skills to the ESL position. Furthermore, being bilingual and bicultural, I have extensive knowledge of both the language and culture of South Korea. This allows me to connect with students of diverse backgrounds and, more broadly, to invite a dialogue of diversity and inclusion within an online/in person classroom if considered a viable candidate.
