About Lance

I am an American-born citizen who just returned to the USA in March of 2023. I have 18 years of teaching ESL experience in Asia and have taught all ages in all areas of studies.
I have taught a variety of students starting at kindergarten level to university students to over 60 years old. I have taught students from around the world nearly every subject using English including general studies, grammar, music, art, business English and job acquisition skills in both private and group classes online as well as in person. Communicating and assisting others’ needs comes easily and naturally for me while giving me a true sense of gratification.
Teaching has also become a passion of mine largely due to the reward of getting to watch students grow and transform while opening many opportunities for their futures. Helping people improve their lives is what I do because it is what I love.
All classes are customized to individual needs and may include multimedia presentations and interaction for better engagement. As a graphic designer of over 30 years, I enjoy making lesson materials vibrant, fun and mentally stimulating for people trying to practice English topics in a real-world, practical way. Adults and children are both welcome.

About the lesson

As a TESOL-certified teacher with over 18 years of teaching students of all ages from around the world, I have logged more than 30,000 teaching hours with over 100,000 students. I am a former IELTS professor and examiner who was responsible for teaching the entire Freshman class English in a major Wuhan University in China during the 2 years he lived there. I acquired a high teacher rating with Teacher of the Month awards from multiple English Centers in Asia as well as a managerial position by his 2nd year of teaching Koreans in the Philippines. At the end of my 5th year in Asia, I moved to Hong Kong where I spent the next 13+ years teaching mostly younger children from kindergarten to primary ages as well as a few high school students, and helped 100s of them pass Cambridge, Trinity, IELTS and other exams with high marks. I now teach a variety of children and adults from Asia, Europe, South America, Africa and North America online.

Aside from my qualifications as an experienced teacher, I also love to interact with kids in an engaging way, especially when conducting storybook reading sessions where I make the words on the page come alive with voice acting, body language, animated facial expressions and supplemental simplified descriptions on every page to help the students immerse themselves into the story by imagining a situation that they can relate to in the real world. Combining stories with relevant songs, media and questions about the content makes sure the students are mastering comprehension while having fun.

In addition to his colorful and diverse journey as an English teacher, I have a background in music performance/teaching (drums & percussion) from age 10, traditional art, creative writing, 2 years of movie review syndication, award-winning nationally published poetry, 2D/3D animation and a wide range of computer software skills that I utilize to make my classes exciting and mentally stimulating for learners who are looking for something more.

Your child will find me to be warm-hearted, patient, kind, understanding, empathetic, fun, energetic and encouraging for confidence-building in my pupils. Many parents over the last decade have commented about how much their child was excited and eager to come to my class in contrast to being unwilling or unable to learn from other teachers in the past. This has been a true testimony to the passion and love that I pour into the work I do for my students to ensure they receive an education in a fun way they will never forget and that will help them in life for many years to come.
