• 1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

  I speak Greek fluently, because of my origins. The difference with a native Greek person is that I also know the definition and the etymology of every word, because of my exceptional Greek tutors who inspired me to learn more. Having the knowledge of the Greek structure (language, culture, society etc) helped me to compare it with other cultures and understand them better. Knowledge is power!

• 2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

  There are many, but I think that the person who made the Greek nation popular and attractive was Alexander, The Great! He was the emblematic representative of Greek culture, because he showed to every nation the beauty of our unique culture.

• 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

  There are so many phrases, but nowadays a really common word is "χαλαρά" /halará/ which means "take it easy", because there is no need for stress. Life is short and beautiful and everybody should learn Greek with me, so I teach them the way the Greek mindset works!

• 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

  Greek culture is one of the oldest cultures in the world. My goal is to keep the Greek language alive and thriving for another five-thousand of years!

• 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

  Nothing is difficult. The only difficulty is to find a great and professional teacher like me. I make the whole process interesting and easy, so you learn fast and with fun!

• 6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

  A year ago, I was trying to learn Mandarin (simplified) through an app, but I didn't have a real tutor to teach me. So one day, I went to a Chinese store and I wanted to use the phrases that I had learned so far. I started greeting the owner of the store in Mandarin-or the language that I thought I was speaking-. The owner couldn't understand what I was saying so I explained in Greek that I am trying to learn Chinese without a tutor. He started laughing and he explained to me that he couldn't understand what I was saying and that my pronunciation was totally wrong. I felt terrible! That's when I realized I need a native and professional speaker to learn Chinese and I found one online! That's what the people who want to learn Greek should do; having me as their Mentor!

• 7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

  I have travelled a lot, but the most crucial era in my life is visiting the USA. Living in New York and working in Greek schools there affected my whole personality. I worked in private schools and I studied in prominent universities. All this experience changed my whole mindset.

• 8) What makes you a Superprof in language?

  I am a teacher in Greece with a Masters Degree in Education. I might have lived in New York but am currently on a Greek island. I used to work in the public school system in Greece but now I have the pleasure of being the Head of Studies at the Greek-American Non Profit Organization that promotes Greek culture and education. I am also currently working on my PhD in Digital Media and Communication at the Ionian University of Greece. Most of my students are Greek-American and bilingual. My life's goal is to influence my students to learn Greek not by heart, but from the heart!
  I have 13 years of teaching experience in New York and in Greece, teaching Greek as a first and as a second language. I can teach Greek (A1-C2 level) depending on my students' needs. Of course every student is different so I make sure to provide a customized program for everyone wanting to learn Greek, specified to your needs, while moving at your pace.
  My methodology is based on Constructivism which is the notion that people actively construct their own knowledge, and that reality is determined by your experiences as a learner. The major concept is that my students use their previously learned knowledge as a foundation and build on it with new things that they learn. My subject expertise is: modern Greek and Greek history, not just the basic history that is written in handbooks, but from the "inside" history.That's why I am the number one Superprof!
