About Liam
Over the course of 5 years teaching piano and working with more than 5000 students, I’ve developed a teaching philosophy that balances strong technical foundation with expressive freedom and creativity. I focus on essential skills like finger independence, rhythm precision, sight-reading, and hand coordination, while also cultivating musical expression through phrasing, dynamic contrast, tone quality, and emotional communication.
Music theory and improvisation are woven into lessons to enrich understanding and encourage students to experiment musically. Each lesson is personalized according to the student’s goals and musical tastes, whether focused on classical, jazz, or contemporary music. One particularly meaningful experience was supporting a student who struggled with performance anxiety and watched them grow to perform confidently at their first recital, illustrating the importance of emotional support alongside technical instruction.
I emphasize goal-setting and disciplined practice to foster consistent progress and active engagement. My mission is to inspire every student to develop curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong passion for piano playing, helping them become expressive musicians who find joy and meaning in their musical journey.

Every time I sit down with a student at the piano, I remind myself that I’m not just teaching them to play a piece—I’m helping them build a relationship with music that could last a lifetime. That belief shapes my approach, which is rooted in patience, responsiveness, and creativity. My lessons are crafted around a balanced mix of technique, expression, and musical understanding.
We work on skills like finger strength, coordination, pedaling, and rhythm control, but always with the goal of making the music come alive. I bring in theory as a natural companion to repertoire, helping students grasp harmonic progressions, patterns, and structure. This gives them the ability to learn faster, memorize more easily, and eventually play and compose with freedom.
I love watching a student’s eyes light up when they realize how a particular progression is used in both Beethoven and in their favorite pop song. I also make room for playful exploration. For younger students, I use movement-based rhythm games, musical storytelling, and guided improvisation to keep lessons engaging and full of discovery. For older students and adults, we explore tone shaping, expressive phrasing, and even genre-specific techniques.
One of my adult students had only ever played classical music, and through weekly listening challenges and creative improvisation, they’ve now added jazz and neo-soul voicings to their skill set. I encourage students to journal about their practice, reflect on performances, and even create musical goals for each season. Lessons aren’t about perfection—they’re about growth. My teaching style is warm and encouraging, with high standards that are matched by a deep respect for where each student is in their journey. Whether a student wants to pursue music professionally or use the piano as a creative escape, I help them build the skills, mindset, and inspiration to make music a part of their identity.
