About Vera

I'm a medical student at UCL currently in my fifth year. In 2020, I completed an intercalated BSc in Global Health, in which I was awarded the Dean's List award as well as a separate prize for my dissertation. I have tutored on and off since the age of 16, covering science subjects and teaching Spanish and English as a second language to teens and adults. For the past two years, I have worked as a transition mentor for UCL Medical School. This role involves teaching core medical concepts to a group of 6-8 first-year medical students. I also acted in a pastoral role to aid in their transition from sixth-form into university life. I tutor Biology at all levels up to sixth form. Having undertaken the gruelling medical school admissions process myself, with successful offers from UCL and Imperial College, I am also available to tutor prospective medics! I can help with personal statements, the UKCAT and BMAT entry exams, as well as interview practice. This is my favourite tutoring work so if you are interested please contact me and I will prioritise you! I live in Gospel Oak and am available to tutor online or in person.

About the lesson

I put the student at the centre of my teaching. Everything I teach is tailored and focused on their interests and goals. I personally find it difficult to focus unless I am being challenged intellectually, so I use the same approach with my students. I am calm, patient, and committed. With my medical admissions tutoring in particular, my goal is not to cheat the admissions system. I want to help my students develop their potential and their ideas to the fullest and to present their best selves to the admissions boards. My lessons typically last for 1 hour. I will usually do a review of what the student has learnt that week. Then we will cover any areas the student is struggling in - where I will provide detailed explanations and practice questions. I also teach my students to use the study techniques that helped me at their level and beyond. Including revision techniques such as flashcards and mindmaps. For medical school admissions tutoring, the approach depends on the students' wants and needs. I can do an hour of interview practice, help draft and refine their personal statement, help with the essay portion of the BMAT exam, etc.

Medical school admissions tutoring is more tailored to the student and requires a larger amount of work outside of the lesson for me. Hence it is charged at £40/hr
