About Benjamin
I'm a data scientist and researcher with a background in astrophysics. I completed my PhD at the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation, where my research focused on some of the most energetic explosions in the universe, before going on to a postdoctoral position at the University of Texas at Austin working on large-scale astronomical surveys.
Physics has been at the centre of my working life for well over a decade, and I genuinely love the subject. That enthusiasm comes through in lessons, and I think it makes a real difference to students who have started to find physics dry or overwhelming.
I've been tutoring on and off since my undergraduate years, working with students at GCSE and A-level across physics and maths. I know what it takes to get to grips with a difficult topic, having spent years working at the frontier of what physics can actually explain, and I try to bring that perspective into every session.
Outside of tutoring and research, I have a broad range of interests including philosophy, music and the natural world, which I think gives me a relaxed and curious approach to learning that students tend to respond well to.
I'm based in Putney, South West London, and offer both in-person and online sessions.

I hold a PhD in astrophysics from the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation, with postdoctoral research experience at the University of Texas at Austin. I've spent nearly a decade tutoring physics at A-level, first during my undergraduate degree and then throughout my PhD, and I bring that depth of experience to every session.
I have a genuine, deep understanding of physics that goes well beyond the syllabus, which means I can answer the "but why?" questions that trip students up and help them build real confidence in the subject. Students who understand the mechanics of what they're doing, rather than memorising procedures, consistently perform better under pressure.
Alongside subject knowledge, I place real emphasis on exam technique: how to read a question carefully, how to approach problems methodically when the answer isn't immediately obvious, and how to stay calm and patient with difficult questions rather than letting nerves or frustration take over. With the right approach, students find that even the hardest questions become manageable, and that confidence carries through to the exam hall.
Lessons are typically one hour and tailored entirely to the individual student, whether that means reinforcing foundations, tackling a topic that isn't clicking, or intensive exam preparation. I enjoy working with all kinds of students, whether A-level physics feels like a brick wall right now or you're pushing for that A*.
I offer both in-person sessions in South West London and online lessons, whichever works best for you.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
I’d highly recommend Benjamin as a GCSE Physics tutor. They taught me personally, and what really stood out was how patient and friendly they were. If I didn’t understand something, they’d take the time to explain it in a different way until it made sense, and I never felt rushed or embarrassed to ask questions. They’re very approachable, which made lessons feel relaxed and much less intimidating, and their positive attitude really helped build my confidence in the subject. Overall, they made a big difference to my understanding of physics and I’d definitely recommend them to other students.
