About Kate

I started my academic journey as a student myself, finding my passion for biology and science as I entered my undergraduate degree. I am currently in my graduate degree for Infectious Diseases and want to help others find their passions in whatever field they need to. I work with finding the strengths in a student, and using them to support material understanding. Everyone is capable of learning, they only need the right tools.

Students bring experiences, backgrounds, and ideas that can influence their college journey in a variety
of ways. Some come with study habits beneficial for one discipline and not another, while others come
with fear or doubt based on past experiences in core subjects like math or science. I primarily work with ages 8 to 65.
In initial meetings with students, I work on getting the whole picture; what works, what hasn’t, and
what may be holding you up. Additionally, I ask what things they enjoy. A student will struggle with any
subject if they can’t find what excites them in the material. Lastly, I begin the process of integrating
their personal and academic lives into one format. Students may be working or responsible for children
and other dependents. I encourage them to build options for reviewing information daily; some days
you need to “be a human” and do chores, other days you can commit to material for hours. Removing
shame from the equation when you’re doing everything you can is a foundational goal I impart on all of
my students.
After the initial meeting, both student and I arrange a sustainable schedule to check in and evaluate
how understanding or goals are being met. Sometimes, we learn a schedule may be too full. Other
times, a student will learn they can add more (study time, project review, etc.) because they’re feeling
progressively more confident. Occasionally, I find myself a cheerleader for students that need someone
in their corner. Every student is unique and it’s fascinating to see them grow in their academic journey.
My teaching philosophy has been built through experiences with grade school children and college
students alike: everyone is capable of growth with the right tools. Some tools and advice I find helpful
for any student:
• A planning method for keeping track of personal/professional/academic commitments- I have
developed free daily and weekly planners [available on request]
• Organic study materials- students may be overwhelmed by multiple commitments and need
something you can pick up and bring along to a doctor’s appointment
• Setting attainable goals- our goal is to be reasonable with balancing one’s self and a variety of
commitments (you’re a human, not a robot)
• Build your confidence in attainable ways- you’re not going to be amazing the first time you start
something, so put the work in now and appreciate your successes along the way
I am passionate about growth and development in education. Through my own journey as an educator,
support staff member, and student, I have worked on methodology for a variety of ages, abilities, and
skill sets. My goal at the end of the day is to help improve and grow their personal skills to develop into
sustainable and successful professionals.
