About Manka

Hi, I'm Manka, a medical student at Cambridge. I went to a non-selective state school where it was rare for people to apply let alone get into highly academic universities. With little support available, I had to work out the application process myself, along with how to learn effectively.

That experience is why I love teaching. I want to give my students the guidance I wish I'd had, from someone who has recently been through the same exams and applications. Seeing a student finally understand a topic or walk into an interview feeling confident is why I love teaching so much.

About the lesson

I teach from first principles: I want you to understand why something works, not just memorise it. Once you understand a concept, you can apply it to questions you've never seen before, and that's what top grades and strong interview answers depend on.

I also teach you how to learn. Everyone learns differently, so we'll find the methods that work best for you, whether that's active recall, spaced repetition, diagrams or explaining ideas out loud. That way your independent study becomes faster and more effective. I had to work this out for myself at a non-selective state school, and it's how I went on to study medicine at Cambridge.

How lessons work:
Lessons last 1 to 1.5 hours. In the first session we'll look at where you are, what you're aiming for and how you like to learn. After that, each lesson is planned around you.

Who the lessons are for:
- Medicine applicants: further reading, current hot topics in medicine, insight into the first two years of medicine at Cambridge, and interview practice for both panel interviews and MMIs
- EPQ: from choosing a topic to the write-up and presentation
- A-level: Maths, Biology and Chemistry
- GCSE: Maths, Triple Science

My qualifications and experience:
- Medical student at Jesus College, Cambridge, currently intercalating in psychology. I achieved a first class in both my first and second years
- A-level: A* in Biology, Chemistry and Maths, full marks in my EPQ
- GCSE: eight grade 9s and a grade 8, an A in FSMQ (Further Maths)
- I've tutored GCSE and A-level students since Year 10, and I've mentored a student through their medicine application
