About Tyler

Chinese-Canadian Tyler Song has performed clarinet with the National Arts Centre Orchestra Mentorship Program, the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic, the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra, and is an alumnus of McGill University and the University of Cincinnati. Tyler was named one of CBC Radio’s 2020 “30 Canadian classical musicians under 30” after his performance of Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto was praised for its “enormous sensitivity” and “beauty of tone production and timbre”. As a composer, his compositions have been performed in concerts with Poetry Stacked and New Downbeat. Tyler is a grant recipient of the British Columbia Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts; his belief that music needs to resonate with a broader audience led him to found performing arts organisation Soirée in 2024. Offstage, Tyler enjoys playing tennis.

About the lesson

Tyler has been teaching since 2022 and strongly believes that focusing on the basic building blocks of clarinet playing allows for rapid progress both technically and musically. He has experience teaching students of all ages and levels; he tailors repertoire, teaching style, and goals to each student. Tyler believes that everyone deserves an enriching music education, whether they want to pursue music as a career, partake in RCM exams, or just play for fun!
