About Mark

I am a multi-instrumentalist specialising in jazz and finger-style guitar playing who has been teaching all manner of musical disciplines to over 100 students for 18 years. After achieving a pass with Distinction in my Grade 8 ABRSM Classical Guitar and guitar teaching Diplomas from the ICMA, I then studied for a BMus at King's College London with a focus on Jazz Guitar and Composition. As a performer I am experienced as a classical and jazz guitarist, playing both solo and with groups, and a trumpet player in both orchestras and jazz-funk groups.

About the lesson

I am happy to take my lead from my students, learn from them and pursue exactly what makes them excited to play music. I've worked with students as young as four and as old as 65; of abilities ranging from complete beginner to semi-professional. I greatly enjoy finding the way to communicate an idea that most resonates and 'clicks' with the student. I am delighted to teach those that wish to learn to read music, but do not insist on this if individual students wish to work more with their ears. However, my preferred way of teaching is a fully rounded approach to musicianship: encompassing aural (listening) skills, reading, music theory, improvisation, harmony, rhythmic understanding and vocal skills.

Deadly! Mark is knowledgeable and very good at explaining. I had some prior knowledge and a background playing another instrument. Mark was very good at identifying my skill level and working with me on things that are a good challenge but not out of reach

Mark is one of the most versatile and skilled guitarists I know, and is a passionate, dedicated, and also incredibly chilled teacher. His breadth of knowledge on the Guitar is truly awe-inspiring, encompassing theory, technique and pedagogy.

Mark regularly blows my mind, most recently with recommendations for Barry Harris and the YouTube channel OpenStudio. A single insight from Mark can give me weeks of practice, and he is super fun to jam with, being able play... well.... anything... and with a groove that is mercilessly hip.

10/10 would recommend on a bus, on a train, in the rain, on a boat, in person, online, in a jazz club, etc.
