About Viyan

I’m a first year computer science student studying at Imperial College London, having left school with 4 A*’s in Maths, Further Maths, Computer Science and Physics A-levels. Some of my exams were for the CIE Pre-U board, meaning that my learning was more understanding and conceptually based - skills which helped me apply my knowledge to unknown scenarios in exams and interviews. My passion for mathematics and computing has played a large role throughout my education, allowing me to gain a deep and varied knowledge of the school curriculum and beyond. I want to use this to help students who struggle with understanding and confidence. I also undertook public exams and successfully applied for computer science during the pandemic and experienced a highly competitive year along with new online processes, placing me in prime position to share all the tactics and methods I used for all aspects of public exams and the computer science entry process.

I have tutored for 3 years, sharing my unique experiences and advice that have improved my student’s grades and confidence greatly, often by several grade points. Furthermore, I tutored my peers in group sessions for many years, through both the refreshed GCSE and A-Levels, largely helping with core understanding and board specific exam-technique to great success. My very recent experience with the computer science application process has given me the knowledge to help those applying this year, as I completed both the CTMUA and STEP, alongside holding interview techniques and personal statement sessions for my peers, to high praise.

About the lesson

Understanding is everything - I believe students excel the most when they are able to identify concepts they don’t fully grasp and as a tutor I can then help build knowledge of the whole area from scratch. I also think it’s important to take an exam oriented approach and work through practice questions with my students so that they are able to learn the right strategy and technique to approach tougher questions. The link created when students apply knowledge to a question helps affirm their understanding. I am very flexible and am happy to adapt to the student’s style of learning to make the experience as positive and productive as possible.

In our first lesson, I will establish how you best learn (visually, through notes, through practice questions, etc.), and what you would like to achieve from our lessons. Whether it be improving your syllabus knowledge, knowing how to tackle every kind of exam question, or helping with assigned schoolwork, we will work toward what you need. I will provide resources such as worked past paper solutions and condensed, easy-to-understand notes.
