About Alexandra
Hi, I’m Alexandra! I’m passionate about wildlife conservation and love making biology approachable and fun for students. With over five years of experience teaching university labs and tutoring high school and undergrad students, I focus on building confidence, asking guiding questions, and using visuals and memory tricks to make tough concepts click. I bring a unique perspective to my teaching thanks to a diverse background—starting as a zookeeper, moving into wildlife rescue leadership, and earning degrees in marine biology, veterinary technology, zoology, and Arctic wildlife research. Today, I manage a conservation research team at Wilder Institute Calgary Zoo, and I’m excited to help students see just how many doors a love of biology can open!

My Approach as a Tutor and How I Share My Knowledge
Hi! I’m a biology enthusiast with over five years of experience helping students succeed as a teaching assistant and grader at the university level. Most of my experience is with first-year biology students, but I’ve also supported second- and third-year students in more specialized courses like ecology, conservation, and vertebrate anatomy.
How I Teach:
My tutoring style is hands-on and interactive. I like to guide students through material by asking lots of questions instead of just giving answers—this helps build confidence and understanding. Because I’m a very visual learner, I use plenty of diagrams, drawings, and charts to make tricky topics easier to grasp. I also love using mnemonics and memory tricks (the sillier the better!) to help concepts stick. Most importantly, I focus on creating a safe, welcoming learning space where students feel comfortable asking questions or asking me to go over something again—no judgment, ever.
What a Lesson Looks Like:
A typical lesson starts with a quick review of key terms and ideas to get a solid foundation. From there, we dive into visuals, examples, and activities to apply that knowledge, so students aren’t just memorizing—they’re really understanding. I like to mix in practice questions, discussions, and fun memory aids to keep things engaging.
What Makes Me Different:
I’ve been in students’ shoes, and I know what it feels like to feel shy or nervous about asking for help. That’s why I prioritize making learning feel approachable and encouraging. With my years of experience running labs and office hours, I’m great at breaking down complicated concepts into manageable steps and tailoring lessons to fit each student’s learning style.
Who I Tutor:
I work with both high school students and university undergrads, especially those in intro biology courses, but I’m also comfortable teaching more advanced topics like anatomy, ecology, and conservation. Whether you’re trying to build confidence, get through a tough class, or just strengthen your study skills, I’d love to help.
