About Briar
I have spent eight years helping more than 250 students develop the precision and analytical skills required for excellence in chemistry. My academic background includes a master's degree in analytical chemistry and professional experience in industrial analytical laboratories where I worked on method development and quality assurance. This practical expertise informs my teaching with real-world examples of how analytical chemistry ensures product safety, environmental compliance, and scientific accuracy. I have taught in school laboratories, universities, and private settings, giving me comprehensive knowledge of practical chemistry education. My students have gone on to study chemistry, medicine, pharmacy, and chemical engineering at competitive universities. I am particularly skilled at helping students master the interpretation of spectroscopic data and the execution of complex laboratory procedures. I design detailed practice materials and maintain a collection of real spectra and experimental data for teaching purposes. Outside of tutoring, I consult on laboratory safety standards, review analytical methods for small companies, and enjoy precision hobbies such as watch repair and photography. My chemistry teaching is meticulous and laboratory-focused, preparing students for both academic success and professional scientific practice. I teach spectroscopy through the physical principles of light-matter interaction combined with extensive practice in interpreting spectra, including NMR, IR, UV-Vis, and mass spectrometry. Laboratory techniques are taught through detailed analysis of experimental procedures, safety protocols, and error minimisation strategies. I emphasise the importance of careful observation, accurate measurement, and systematic record-keeping in scientific work. For organic chemistry, I teach mechanism-based problem solving where students learn to predict products, analyse reaction pathways, and propose synthetic routes. Physical chemistry is taught with strong mathematical foundations, ensuring students can derive equations, understand approximations, and apply them correctly. I teach students to write laboratory reports and research papers following professional scientific conventions. For exam preparation, I focus on the precise presentation of chemical reasoning, clear diagrams, and the logical sequencing of multi-step calculations. My sessions are highly structured with clear objectives, detailed explanations, and comprehensive practice. I also prepare students for practical examinations and university admissions tests that include laboratory skills assessments.
