About Silke
I obtained my Masters degree in Biochemistry and Biotechnology and finished my government supported PhD research fellowship between Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Science. Afterwards I moved to South-Korea where I was appointed as a Junior Professor setting up the practicals of Microbiology and teaching Virology to first Bachelors of Bioscience Engineering at the Incheon Global Campus (harboring 1 European and 3 American Universities). I moved to Australia as I was awarded a government supported postdoctoral research fellowship by CSIRO where I currently still work. I love sharing my knowledge and get people enthusiastic for science so I am part of the Scientists&Mathematicians In Schools Program where I went to give interviews in classrooms and organized a 'Fun with Science' hands-on dry ice session as well as invite kids over to our labs and do some really cool experiments. I am also involved in the STEM open days and National Science Week. I was in the scouts for 13 years and was also was an outdoor trekking guide in Sweden hosting winter adventure and kayakking camps. Being a Belgian, I can speak fluent French and Dutch.

My philosophy in teaching is to provide knowledge in the most fun, informative, accessible and interesting way and to encourage the student to learn, ask questions and develop their own capacity to have a scientific mind. I have extensive experience in mentoring and teaching a wide variety of students, ranging from year 5 kids through to high school, university and PhD students. It is my enthusiasm and drive that students find compelling.
