About Cosmin

My teaching skills are certified by The Higher Education Academy, of which I am an Associate Fellow. I have previously taught Sociology at undergraduate level at Lancaster University. I can lead on classes in Sociology, Human Geography, Research Methods, as I have acquired extensive expertise of these disciplinary fields through my doctoral training and research.

I am an empathetic and committed teacher, having received excellent feedback from my students at Lancaster University. I would love to take this experience forward and provide excellent teaching through the platform superprof.co.uk.

About the lesson

Hi, this is Cosmin, a recently awarded doctor in Sociology at Lancaster University. I am available to organise lessons on a broad range of topics in the fields of social and communication sciences. I am confident that my doctoral degree in Sociology, my substantial teaching experience, as well as my strong communication skills acquired as a trained journalist will contribute to a memorable teaching experience.

During my doctoral training, I have acquired a solid teaching experience. As a teaching assistant at Lancaster University, I have taught an Introduction to Sociology module to first-year undergraduate students.

The topics and concepts addressed in this module are diverse and deal with both classic social theory as well as more contemporary approaches. The blocks are: Self and Society (Sigmund Freud, Norbert Elias, Georg Simmel, Erving Goffman); Deviance and Sociology of Health and Illness (Anne Rogers, David Pilgrim); Urban Sociology (Zygmunt Bauman, David Harvey, Richard Sennett, John Urry); Power (Michel Foucault); Sociology of the Future (Barbara Adam, Ruth Levitas).

I have guided students in three substantive ways. First, I have assisted them in deepening their understanding of contemporary societies through sociological concepts (e.g. society, the subject, identity, nationalism, power, community). Second, I have guided them in developing study and research skills, including using the library, the internet, reading, taking notes, writing, working in groups, discussing in groups, oral presentations, collecting and analysing empirical data. Third, I have supported the students in acquiring basic skills of sociological thinking such as identifying and questioning underlying assumptions, patterns and structural forces, unravelling relations of power and interest, conceptual analysis, linking everyday practice with wider societal phenomena, summarizing sociological ideas and arguments.

Additionally, I have a solid background in journalism and communication, having worked for a decade as a newspaper editor. I can teach classes in journalism, media studies, mass communication.
