About Reza
I was brought up to view teaching profession as a sacred career in which reason and passion work in a very close association. Being passionate, as an inseparable nature of teaching, was the experience I absorbed while growing up (grandfather, four aunts, one uncle of mine were and are school teachers). I have learned to consider teaching, and particularly Literature, as a means to help open up the ways of humanity to man (with all due respect to Pope and Milton). Such an attitude encourages me to enjoy teaching and enables me to provide an atmosphere in my individual tutoring and classes in which students acquire to engage intellectually and creatively with cultural texts of all kinds and to be able to produce thoughts of their own rather than be a consumers of others’

My pedagogical strategy in classes includes interactive and reciprocal methods in which I try to encourage the students to take part in the teaching-learning process actively in a way that they should not feel they are ‘oppressively’ just passive receivers but crucial role players of the procedure. I strongly believe that the pleasure of learning is in the moment when the learner has the feeling that s/he has played an essential and constructive role in sharing an idea or knowledge. This moment does not happen unless the teacher helps the students participate in the development of the course. Accordingly, I will not enjoy my classes if I am supposed to be the dominant and only speaker and producer of knowledge in the dichotomy of speaker/listener as the character-teacher of Oleanna by David Mamet asserts. Helping them and showing where they need to go for the sources, I always ask my students to attend the classes with some pre-reading materials and assignments. Therefore, when discussing the syllabi, they are commissioned with some information to help them participate in discussion and programmes of the study. In my opinion, when we learn something, the conscious awareness of knowing helps us grow more humane and as Paulo Freire puts it, education “makes sense when women and men learn that through learning they can make and remake themselves, when men and women are able to take responsibility for themselves as beings capable of knowing.”
