About Chris
I enjoy all scientific subjects, with mathematics in particular being my passion. I am currently an undergraduate student at the University of Bristol studying Mathematics & Philosophy. I have previously tutored for friends and family members, and have the patience and understanding to help others understand topics that they struggle with.
At A-level I achieved A*s in Maths, Further Maths, Physics, and Chemistry. As a recent A-level student I have a comprehensive understanding of the specification and I am particularly aware of which topics students find the hardest and how to effectively teach these.

Experience:
As the mathematics prefect within my college, I held regular one-on-one sessions with a GCSE student that required help. Through these sessions I was able to ascertain specific areas to target for improvement, which I would cover in subsequent sessions. This student performed above expectations upon sitting his GCSEs.
I also assisted the teaching staff with some of the younger students in years 8 and 9, so I have experience with introducing younger students to new topics.
Tutoring Approach:
I strive to teach in accordance with mathematician George Polya's pedagogical principles, which I myself have found very beneficial throughout my education.
Simply put, this method helps to ensure the student learns rather than purely being given answers. It is the tutor's role to gently guide the student through the four main stages of problem solving; understand the problem, devise a plan, carry out the plan, and look back.
Gently nudging the student in the correct direction leads to a renewed enjoyment for the subject as the students enjoy the feeling of discovery and accomplishment through this method. It also creates stronger and longer lasting proficiency, which the student is able to apply even when the problem's are modified.
