About Joseph
I have tutored nine students in GCSE and A level Maths, Chemistry, Biology and Physics over the past three years. I have also mentored two students in their applications to Oxford University (one applying for Medicine and one applying for Biology). This has been both in-person and via skype. All of my clients have greatly improved their exam grades since commencing tutoring with me, and have been very happy with the service I have provided.
The sessions I have given have been very interactive. I believe that the tutee should do most of the talking during the sessions, in order to keep them engaged and constantly questioning and reviewing what they have been learning. I always provide my own notes for my tutees after every session, so that they have all of the key information that has been covered during the session to review in their own time. I also provide them with ‘homework’ questions to complete for the next session, so that they can consolidate their learning from the previous lesson.
I am always keen to engage both the student and their parents/carers in the tutee’s learning and progress. Therefore, I provide an emailed report to both the tutee and the parent/carer at the end of every session on my view of the student’s progress during that session. However, I also like to have face-to-face discussion before and after every session with the tutee and their parent/carer to discuss exactly how they feel the sessions are going and how they would like to change the format of the sessions and exactly what academic topics they are most struggling with and would like to cover next. I believe that learning must be student-led and uniquely tailored to each individual. My role is to facilitate their education as best as possible, using multi-media presentations and discussions, suited to their particular needs and wants.
Experiencing the tutorial system while a student at Oxford University has enabled me to learn how to deliver intensive one-to-one sessions that are both friendly and personable, but also academically rigorous and challenging. I have also completed a five-day Teaching Skills course at Imperial College, London. From this, I learnt about a variety of different learning and teaching styles, and how best to maximise a student’s learning by suiting the sessions to their particular requirements.
