About David
David has enjoyed a rewarding career in music education. As Head of Music Department at Poole Grammar School for over twenty years, he has taught generations of students, many of whom have gone onto further education and careers in Music.
David is Assistant Organist at Christchurch Priory, Dorset, and holds the highest UK qualifications as an Organist - Fellow of the Royal College Organists - and as a prizewinning holder of the RCO’s Choral Training Diploma - FRCO(DipCHM), in addition to holding a BMus(Hons) degree London University after undergraduate study at The Royal Academy of Music.
Alongside his work at Poole Grammar School, David maintained his active interest in composition. On Christmas Day 2014, his arrangement of “I saw three ships” was performed by Portsmouth Cathedral Choir on BBC Radio 4, and recorded by them on CD, also being published on the cover CD of BBC Music Magazine. His recent orchestral overture “One Giant Leap…” was written and first performed in 2019 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing by Apollo 11 in July 1969. In June 2024, David conducted his own orchestration of “I saw three ships” in Studio 1, Abbey Road.
David is an enthusiastic, knowledgeable and engaging tutor who enjoys working with students of all ages.

Motivation is the key to unlock all good progress in learning and David is able to adapt his teaching style and materials to suit his students in order to support their learning.
David can offer tuition in all areas of academic music - GCSE and A level, but also for those interested in university entrance for Music courses, or undergraduates in need of further support in composition techniques, harmony, counterpoint, fugue and orchestration. David uses Steinberg 'Dorico Pro' in his own composition projects but is able to use other Music applications with students, as required.
As part of the planning for future lessons, David assesses current understanding and skills and looks for the best ways to adapt his resources and teaching styles to maintain the all-important motivation.
