About Beth
I am a current third year medical student at the University of Sheffield having previously completed a Medical Sciences degree at Leeds University.
My teaching experience goes back to before I started university. Whilst on my gap year I taught English to Sri Lankan students ranging from age 4-16 with classes as big as 35 students. I did not know the Sinhalese language extensively so communicating and teaching was a challenge, however, all my students passed their summer progress exams.
One summer in university I was an instructor at a Mad Science summer camp, teaching groups of children science in innovative and new ways. There would often only be 2-3 of us for a group of 30 young children ages 6-13. I really enjoyed this experience as it taught me how science can be taught in interesting ways rather than learning theory by wrote.
Whilst at university I tutored a student through her GCSEs and first year of A-Level. I mainly taught her Chemistry, however, would often give her Biology lessons too. I really enjoyed my experience with her. I tutored her once a week 1:1 and following a session I would give her real exam questions to complete so as to give her realistic exam practice rather than just covering the theory. This method also allowed me to see if she was progressing and if my methods were working. She did brilliantly and achieved an A* at GCSE and went on to get an A* at A-Level and get into Medical School, like me!
Since graduating, I have tutored 2 students, one Biology and Chemistry GCSE and the other Biology and Chemistry A-Level. Once again, I did weekly 1:1 sessions and used real exam questions to test their knowledge and progress. This recent experience has kept me up to date with the changing curriculum.
My varied experience has meant I am able to pick up on when a method is working for a student or if another technique is required. This means all my sessions are productive.
I have also had experience working in nurseries with pre-school children. Although I was not there to tutor them, it gave me insight into how lessons could be taught to younger children and effective methods to keep them engaged. During this pandemic, I am aware that a lot of younger children are without school and as such I would feel confident in teaching younger children, if required.
If you have any questions either about my experiences, methods or anything else, please do not hesitate to contact me. I have moved home during the COVID-19 pandemic but would be happy to move to webcam sessions when I have to move back to Sheffield.

I first started tutoring 5 years ago, having taken on multiple students since then. I quickly realised that having one lesson style fits all attitude is not an effective way of tutoring so I adapt my methods and aides depending on what works best for my student.
The general structure however is as follows. Before a lesson, I will usually ask for a few topics that my student wants to cover or revise so that I can find good resources to aide learning. I will usually try to go back to basics at the beginning of the session and build from there. I usually finish the session, if we have completed the topic, with some relevant exam questions so that the knowledge can be applied and so that future questions can be answered with confidence.
My tutoring experience has mainly been with GCSE and A Level students. However, I have had experience with all age ranges. Most recently, I have been working in a nursery. I was involved in preparing the pre-school children for school through educational activities such as drawing, reading, spelling etc. I also was an instructor for Mad Science which put on educational birthday parties or summer camps for children between 6-13 years old. Although not tutoring for an exam or to follow a curriculum, it gave me experience in being able to explain complex matters in a simple way. Please find additional experience listed below.
If you have any questions regarding my methodology or past experience, please do not hesitate to contact me.
