About Noel

Having 30 years teaching has been a career for me but much more. It's been a privilege to watch so many young people grow up to adulthood like a year 10 student, who years later, invited me to his wedding and thanked me for being the only teacher not to give up on him despite his poor behaviour. For the first 20 years I taught mainly maths and Science around or near Hobart.

For the last 10 years I have been teaching in Vietnam and China .... to secondary students or adults whose native language is not English. Firstly I developed my ESL skills teaching in language centres in Ha Noi. Later I taught IELTS and Academic English at one of the top High Schools in Jiangsu Province in the P.R. of China. The school also being noteworthy as being the high school where president Hu Jintao went to school.

I returned to Ha Noi to take up a position at the Vietnam-Australia School. There I taught English and Business Studies for a number of years but was then asked to teach Science when we started the Cambridge Secondary 1 courses. I enjoyed my time there immensely and believe that my time there was successful from the reaction of staff and students to my leaving. To quote my Vice-principal, "Noel has high standards for his students and they responded well to his guidance. His classroom was always a stimulating place to study. Noel often had experiments running which reflected his own curiosity in the world around him." My students seemed genuinely distressed that I was going and I was extremely surprised and touched by how much they had appreciated my teaching over the years there.

I have returned to Australia with my Vietnamese wife and 5 year old boy who has started Kindergarten here in Hobart. I needed to return to Hobart to look after my elderly mum. I loved teaching overseas students so I am looking for the opportunity to teach English to adult immigrants or overseas students. As I have a strong background in Science and have taught Math to high school level, I also seek to tutor secondary students in those areas.

About the lesson

As a quality teacher I aim engage the students and make learning a joy as well as provide, for all students in my care, the skills necessary for them to be successful in their career and satisfy their immediate educational goals. With younger students, educational objectives are achieved through a partnership between the student, the teacher and the family where appropriate. For all my students, I firmly believe that quality teaching demands that the teacher addresses the student’s individual needs and be prepared to modify the teaching program of each student in a manner that is relevant to their daily lives. If the classroom tasks are authentic and mirror real life situations the student will not only enjoy their learning but they are more likely to retain the information and be able to apply their learning to future tasks. They are more likely to become independent learners, more flexible workers and more able to determine their future career pathways.
