About Maxine

Hi! I'm Maxine. I am half-Chinese, half-British, having grown up in Shanghai and currently living in the UK and France. I am a world citizen that is passionate about languages and would love to help others that wish to progress on their language learning journey. I love the satisfaction of teaching others both languages and my culture and learning about the nations of others. It would be a pleasure to have a conversation about our different countries.
I have been teaching languages online on a part-time basis since June 2019, primarily helping others improve their oral English through conversation practice, along with specialising in IELTS test preparation.
Moreover, as I have applied to universities in the UK and the US, I can also help with the university admissions process of both countries.
In regards to my prior teaching experiences, I have taught disabled children in Shanghai between the years 8-15 English as a Second Language for four months, 35 hours a week. During this time, I primarily taught elementary to middle school level English and STEM classes in English, sometimes overtaking Chinese and Maths classes if it was required. Now, I continue to volunteer with disabled children in a charity, meaning I continue to refine my teaching skills and qualities such as patience which is a good thing to have as a teacher. Moreover, I am TEFL-certified, demonstrating expertise in teaching English as a foreign language.
My other passion is psychology which I would later study at university. I am particularly interested in cultural psychology and neurosciences. I would love to talk about this subject with any of my future students.

About the lesson

- Full immersion (meaning I would speak completely the target language, as this is how I learnt French and found to be the most effective way to get used to the language)
- Interactive activities (conversations, debates, questions)
- Writing and reading tasks (e.g. reading comprehensions)
For Chinese: Based on the HSK requirements
For English: Based on the English GCSE/American K-12 curriculum
- IELTS test preparations: Orals will be based on existing questions which we will plan out together.
- Essay planning practice

There will be no cost for travel if appointments are within 1km, otherwise, I would need to factor in costs for bus tickets:)
