About Jonathan

I am a qualified primary school teacher with four years of classroom experience, and I have been teaching Music Theory for the past 11 years, working with students from complete beginners through to university level. All of my exam-focused students have passed ABRSM graded theory exams with at least a merit, and many have achieved distinctions. Students who chose not to take exams still developed a strong, practical working knowledge of Music Theory. I hold both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Music from King’s College London, where I specialised in Music Theory and Analysis, with particular focus on 20th-century music and the Middle Ages. My teaching style is lively, clear, and engaging. I aim to make Music Theory enjoyable and accessible for learners of all ages. I have taught many adults who discovered a genuine passion for Music Theory later in life, and, as a qualified primary school teacher, I use a wide range of age-appropriate, creative approaches to make theoretical concepts engaging and understandable for children.

About the lesson

Our lessons will focus on developing the basic ideas of Music Theory in a fun and engaging way. We will review the key concepts in the initial sessions to provide a scaffold to explore broader ideas and topics. We will have regular 'check-ins' to make sure that you understand everything we are covering. I am highly flexible in approaching issues and will work with you to develop the best tuition method. We will also create a personal learning plan to make sure we achieve your goals! Suppose you want to pursue Music Theory for fun. In that case, we will spend our time discussing key topics and working through new concepts together each week. As this is my academic area of specialism, what you learn in lessons will be informed by the latest research available!

I am available to teach any level of music theory from general interest to university levels. I am also very well versed in the ABRSM graded syllabus from grades 1 - 8.
