About Catherine

Hello! My name is Catherine, and I am a passionate violinist, performer, and teacher based in Cape Town, South Africa.

I hold a Bachelor of Music (BMus) degree and am currently completing my Master's (MMus) in Violin Performance at Stellenbosch University. Alongside my private teaching studio, I am the Resident Violin Teacher at Generation Schools Somerset West.

As an active performer, I regularly perform as a soloist, orchestral musician, and chamber musician. My musical journey has given me the opportunity to perform with renowned orchestras, appear as soloist, and collaborate with talented musicians in a wide variety of places. These experiences shape my teaching and allow me to share practical performance knowledge with my students.

I believe learning the violin should be both enjoyable and rewarding. My aim is to help each student build confidence, develop excellent technique, and discover a genuine love for music. Whether you're a complete beginner, preparing for examinations, or looking to take your playing to the next level, I will guide and encourage you every step of the way.

I look forward to helping you achieve your musical goals and sharing the joy of making music together!

About the lesson

Every student learns differently, which is why I tailor each lesson to the individual's age, goals, learning style, and experience. Whether you are picking up the violin for the first time, preparing for ABRSM, UNISA, or school examinations, or looking to refine your technique and musical expression, lessons are designed to help you progress with confidence while developing a genuine enjoyment of music.

My teaching focuses on building a strong technical foundation alongside musicality. We work on posture, tone production, intonation, bow technique, rhythm, sight-reading, ear training, and expressive playing, while also developing good practice habits that students can use independently. I strive to create a positive, encouraging environment where students feel motivated, supported, and challenged to reach their full potential!

I hold a BMus degree and am currently completing my Master's (MMus) in Violin Performance at Stellenbosch University. Alongside my private teaching studio, I am the resident violin teacher at Generation Schools Somerset West. As an active soloist, orchestral musician, and chamber musician, I bring real-world performance experience into my teaching, helping students develop both technical excellence and confident, expressive musicianship.

I teach children, teenagers, and adults of all levels - from complete beginners to advanced students. Whether your goal is to play for enjoyment, prepare for examinations or auditions, or pursue violin at a higher level, I would love to help you achieve your musical goals.
