About Jarrett

Making theater has been a part of my life since I was very young. I've done, acting, singing, dancing, writing and more. But one thing that has never changed is my need to teach.

For six years now I have been a Teaching Artist for various theater and education companies around the greater Philadelphia area including but not limited to, Philadelphia Theatre Company, Delaware Shakespeare Theater and the Philadelphia Arts Education Partnership. Working with different colleagues and students of all ages, I've learned that to hone in one what makes each student great, what challenges they face and the best way to create the work they want. It isn't about being a perfect actor or theater artist. It's about creating authentic work that the individual can be proud of.

Among my own personal accomplishments, I've self produced my own play, performed with organizations such as Philly Young Playwrights, Theater in the X and VanMartin Productions. I'm also a part of Interact Theater Company's 2018-2020 Core Playwrights program.

I started out as an intern at Philadelphia Theatre Company in their education department. After about 2 years I was promoted to assistant teaching artist for their Philly Reality residency program. This led to becoming a Lead TA and many other TA positions

I have been a Teaching Artist for 6 years at various companies. I have also, for the past year and a half been a part of the Albert M Greenfield Fellowship under Philadelphia Theatre Company's education department.

About the lesson

I usually begin with a lot of getting to know you exercises. Not just to establish a relationship but to understand where a person's art comes from. From there it becomes about tapping into that source and using it to figure out what kind of art we want to make in the moment and what tangible piece we need to feel accomplished.

I have a worked with children from 5th to 12th grade. I have also worked with adult and senior communities in homeless shelters, psychiatric hospitals, prisons and senior centers.

Find a teacher who genuinely is interested in your voice and cultivating it. The best kind of teachers want you to succeed and will look for tools and avenues that best suit you. It isn't about being perfect. It's about your growth.

During a summer program, myself and my colleagues put in the double amount of work to make sure theater was accessible to children and teens of all races, orientations and genders. We then ended up have a large group of non binary, trans and queer kids who were able to freely be themselves and through that freedom, create more interesting and thought provoking art.
