About Samuel

Hello, I'm Sam! I am less than a month away from graduating summa cum laude with my Bachelor's degree in Neuroscience and minors in Biology and Chemistry. Outside of the classroom, I have accumulated three years of research experience between the fields of bacteriophage genomics, neuro-epigenetics, cognitive dynamics of language, and learning/memory neural networks. I have been tutoring general science courses at the introductory college level for the past two years, and I have had the privilege of witnessing my students conquer subjects that are instrumental to achieving their aspirations. These priceless experiences have inspired me to pursue secondary education as the next stage of my professional career.

Throughout my tutoring experience, I've learned to prioritize my students' particular skills and methods when it comes to understanding a new concept. I work hard to ensure that every new concept I teach resonates with something my students already understand in a manner by which they understand it; this way, they can focus on building their knowledge rather than accommodating new ideas as foreign information. Thus, I tend to specialize in conceptual understanding and processes rather than rote learning that lacks overall structure.

My tutoring strengths are general chemistry, organic chemistry, introductory biology, molecular genetics, anatomy, physiology, neurobiology, and cognitive neuroscience. I am accustomed to tutoring introductory university students, but I am gladly willing to tutor any students from high-school to adulthood.

Though I'm new to the online tutoring platform, I am by no means new to tutoring! Please feel free to reach out with any questions about my methodology or expertise, and I hope we can arrange a lesson soon!

I often tell my students something along these lines:

"My goal is for you to no longer need me. I want to help you become an independent learner."

Of course, I have no problems seeing my students all the time--I love to build relationships and see them on a regular basis. However, I desire more so for my students to acquire the tools necessary to learn in their own style, at their own pace, and without obstacles. So, my favorite aspect of tutoring is witnessing students as they uncover and develop their capacity for curiosity, understanding, and genius. It looks different in everybody, and that's the best part! Tutoring allows me a front row seat to experience the wonder of the human mind and its incredible capacity for growth, and I have the privilege of playing a part in this adventure.

Throughout my university experience, I have developed several skills necessary for effective communication, both in formal and casual contexts. These skills have come through leading campus tours, delivering research presentations, and tutoring both individuals and groups. Since good communication is fundamental to teaching and learning, I find these skills instrumental in creating effecting tutoring environments for my students.

About the lesson

I think it's important to spend the first few minutes of a session getting to know my students, their personalities, and their aspirations. After all, people tend to connect better once they understand each other as people. After this, I typically spend about twenty minutes gauging my new student's general conceptual understanding and learning/studying techniques. I do this by addressing their initial questions in an interactive, conversational manner rather than introducing my own rubrics or distracting methods. Once I gain a better understanding of how my student learns, I capitalize on their preferences for the remainder of our tutoring experience.

You will likely find an overwhelming number of teachers who are knowledgeable of your subject material and possess a wealth of academic experience. While knowledge is of course fundamental to teaching, it is of no use to the teaching environment if it cannot be made clear to you through effective dialogue. So, find someone who can communicate difficult concepts in a manner with which you connect. This might take some trial and error, but the search for someone who understands the way you think is critical to finding an effective teacher.
