About Rachel

I have been tutoring topics in chemistry and biology for over three years. I also offer assistance with writing lab reports, understanding laboratory concepts, and discussing the applications of course content. I graduated magna cum laude from Southern Connecticut State University where I majored in chemistry, with a concentration in biochemistry and minored in biology. I received the Biochemistry award for excellence in the subject, as well as the Harry Haakonsen award for academics and service in science. I was a paid tutor at my university, where I increased exam performance by 12% on average in both General Chemistry and Human Anatomy Courses. I have recently worked as an MCAT content creator for Magoosh Test Prep, creating study PDF's and reviewing organic chemistry videos for content relevance. I completed my honors thesis in chemistry and was awarded departmental honors for this document and presentation. I also completed research in histology, leading to a pre-published abstract on Marvix, a repository for marine climate research.

Working as a tutor is mutually beneficial, not only am I supporting the academic improvement of others but, I am able to strengthen my own current knowledge of these topics. It is extremely gratifying to see students’ enthusiasm grow after showing and explaining the possibilities of science. My goal in this role is to inspire and instill confidence, with the intention that they may feel the deep connection and curiosity that currently drives me to constantly seek and explore as a life-long learner.

I began offering free, walk-in tutoring and lab writing sessions as President of my college's chemistry club. This led to a paid position on campus, where I help group and personal tutoring sessions with students.

- B.S. in Chemistry with a concentration in Biochemistry and minor in Biology.

-Paid and volunteer experience tutoring students in General Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry (Quantitative Analysis), Organic Chemistry, and Biochemistry. As well as Cellular and Molecular Biology, Human Anatomy, Histology, and Brain Anatomy and Physiology.

-Contract MCAT content creator for Magoosh Test Prep: creating study guide PDF's for students taking the MCAT and reviewing Organic Chemistry content videos.

About the lesson

I establish which concepts a student feels they understand best. Reviewing this information first helps build the academic confidence that is required to move onto the topics that pose as challenging. This also helps to determine gaps in knowledge that may be preventing them from fully understanding a concept.

I have worked with students with various majors, backgrounds, and interests. I have also worked with students who have developmental disabilities and difficulty focusing/reading/writing.

I know what it's like to not understand a scientific concept and feel completely overwhelmed and discouraged by the subject matter. I want students to know that my sessions are a completely judgement free, safe space, where they can openly voice their concerns and share their honest feelings twoards learning and understanding science.

I recently attended my first virtual science conference. It was a very memorable experience!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I would ask students to think about what they feel strongest and most confident about. I would then ask them what they feel is most challenging. I believe it is also helpful for students to identify what helps them learn and establish an internal motivation that will allow them to be successful, not just in the topics we cover, but as an overall student.

Details

My standard pricing is $60/hr. For lab writing services an additional $25 is added for that session. I can also help create schedules and study guides for exams for an additional charge of $50 per guide or schedule.

Cancellation Policy:

-No call/No show - will be charged for half of the total session fee.

-Less than 24hr notice - will be charged for 15 minutes of total session fee.
