About Jemila

I love bridging the gap between the known and the unknown for students of all levels and learning capabilities.

I am a fourth year PhD candidate in Earth, Environmental and Planetary Sciences. As someone who came from a big city and knew nothing about the geosciences at the start, I understand how daunting the subject matter can be. Having worked with both children as young as age 8 on simple earth science concepts, to being a teaching asistant to undergraduate students, I love to see the difference a little bit of extra attention can make in empowering students to want to learn.

As an undergrad, my professor encouraged me to be the TA for one of his advanced courses. From there, I found something I was actually quite good at! I enjoy breaking down complex concepts and making them easy to understand.

I have a bachelors degree in Geosciences from Denison University. I studied Natural Resource Management in Brazil and Sustainable Urban Development in South Korea. I have conducted and presented research at national conferences. I am currently working on my research and dissertation in geochemistry and experimental petrology.

About the lesson

Students will fill out a survey in order for me to get to know them and to find out what specific subjects they need to address.

From there, we create a step by step plan catered to the individual in order to expand upon their subject knowledge in the areas needed.

Students can choose between 30 min, 45 min, 1 hr or 1 hr 15 min sessions conducted in person or via Zoom.

I have worked with young students from 8 years old, to college aged students. I currently work with a high school student who I am mentoring in my lab.

Look for someone who is easy to talk to and you feel comfortable around. If you feel uneasy while you're getting tutored, it might be hard to learn!
