About DeLani

Is history a bore? Does it feel like a boring drone of dates, numbers, and battles? I can help change that! History isn't just recitation and old guys in powdered wigs. History is a story -- of people, their motivations and desires, their flaws and strengths, and the overarching theme of humanity.

Qualifications:

-Bachelor of Arts in History with a minor in Political Science (received in 2019)

-Attended summer school program at Harvard University for English and Musical Theater

-Over 15 years of childcare experience, including helping with homework from every subject

-Led multiple tours to 6th-8th grade aged students at local Holocaust Museum as part of undergraduate study

-No social media, but can meet over Zoom/Facetime/etc. for a first impression.

-Lots of videos, songs, jokes, and fun factoids and stories to make history fun and engaging.

I had originally planned to go into teaching upon graduation, but found work in public government.

I have a Bachelor of Arts in History with a minor in Political Science.  My concentration was in Latin American and Cold War history, but I also am knowledgeable about American/US History and World History (particularly SWANA/MENA history and European history).

I will ask them their issues and problem areas, their goals in tutoring, and what success in the subject would look like for them.  I also can utilize tests and other "paper" methods to get a baseline of their knowledge and grasp of the material.  I also excel in hands-on and visual learning, but can adapt to any and all learning styles.

I have worked with all types of people both in a teaching/tutoring capacity as well as an otherwise professional capacity, including former employment at a home for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  I myself suffer from ADHD and understand the special circumstances that can present with learners and am adaptable to their needs.

Be open to learning in a way you may not have -- my grandmother was fond of saying "if you keep doing what you've always done, you'll keep getting what you've always gotten".  Shake it up a little and be surprised at your own power!

I was very excited to be able to relate my knowledge of redlining, housing discrimination, and the Fair Housing Act into my current job when helping to provide insight of the challenges to develop long-term goals for our industry.  I also was really excited to see the actual Fair Housing Act bill on display in Washington DC in June 2021!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
How do you best learn?  What do you find yourself needing to go over repeatedly?  What helps you make connections in your brain between ideas and concepts?  Are you okay with presenting your knowledge and where it lacks without judging yourself?  How much do you intend to learn -- enough to pass a test, a class, or more?
