About Mike

My teaching is practical and understandable. I make sure you understand the math concepts so that you are successful no matter what numbers are put in front of you. I show you the vocabulary, the rules and how the rules work. Then you learn how to recognize which tool will solve each problem.

I have had a 95% success rate of students for testing.

Being able to make a math concept make sense to a student. Also, helping the student understand the value of learning and working until you get the correct answer. There is a lot of pride in getting things done right. It develops a hard work ethic which enable students to not only succeed in math but in life.

Decided to go to college (Hardin-Simmons University--Abilene) to be a coach and teach math.

Did a few years of military service right out of college, then started teaching at the Elementary level for aobut 9 years.

Continued to teach at the middle school and high school levels.

I have settled into teaching middle school age currently.

Over 23 years of teaching math (4th graders through 12 graders)

Years of instructing soldiers as a military officer for 10 years.

Coaching athletes for a number of years brings a "how to" do things mentality to the process.

About the lesson

In my conversations with a new student, I explore their desire to learn and succeed. I am searching for a "learning attitude." Learning the numbers is not difficult--comes with practice. But having an attitude to work until you find the answer will bring long-term success.

I have worked with At Risk students as well as AP students.

I have tutored both genders and all ages.

I usually sit down with the parents and the student to identify goals they want to accomplish.

Find someone who can relate to you and understands out to used examples, models, illustrations to put mental pictures in your brain about how the numbers work.

I love watching my kids do things. My son is my computer expert and math genius. My oldest is my singer and artist.

My youngest is my player--i enjoy watching her play sports.

Most recently, seeing my youngest go through some hard tryouts to make a Select Volleyball team was exciting and nerve racking at the same time.
