About Rebecca

I am recent high school graduate and attend St. Edward's University, making me well knowledgeable of the situations students currently face. I love to help people learn topics well, and not just for passing a test.

I am still a child at heart, am fairly well grounded in my life and future plans, and love to help people find help in their various struggles. I am currently a freshman studying for my Bachelor's of Arts in Psychology to be applied towards becoming a therapist.

I currently am an intern at my former high school, a STEM focused charter school, where I am a substitute, admin aid, and tutor for various fields from middle school and high school math to character education. I love to help students realize the usefulness of subjects, or sometimes, be realistic and find the joy in subjects that may not be helpful later on. I have been an intern for a short time, but have been tutoring under the supervision of mentors and colleagues for multiple years in English, Turkish, and math.

I particurally love math, English, psychology, and music, though I am willing to help in mostly any field. I was a QuestBridge Finalist and College Prep Scholar and graduated in the top of my class.

I have been under the mentorship of various teachers and religious leaders for multiple years which helped me to learn to teach. I became a Bible Study group teacher 5 years ago which helped me to learn to create lessons and develop topics for discussion for multiple ages.

I currently am an intern at my former high school where I tutor and substitute for various subjects. I love to help students, and orignally planned on becoming a teacher.

I am a college freshman at St. Edward's University, graduated high school from a STEM focused charter school in the top of my class, was a QuestBridge College Prep Scholar and College Match Finalist, and have tutored under the supervision of mentors and colleagues for various years and subjects. I am a psychology major and currently a math minor, though it may change to a philosophy minor. I love math and music, have been playing piano for nearly 11 years, guitar for 5, and have been in various musical groups, choirs, bands, other fields.

About the lesson

I would prefer to learn about the personality of the student and their interests and pleasures prior to studying the topics at hand, mainly to better learn how to focus the studying.

After learning about the student, I prefer to observe how the student does with a problem or situation on their own, just to not waste time reviewing a topic that is already set in stone.

Encouragement is vital, but it is not all that is needed. I typically encourage a student, but also am willing to say the truth (not harshly, though) and help develop what is needed.

I have worked with all ages from preschoolers to highschoolers, and even have proofread papers for a doctorate student. That being said, I have worked with students who refused to speak, students fascinated by the subject but not very knowledgeable, special needs students (DISCLAIMER: I am not credited or certified in this field and suggest finding a tutor who had had the training for severe or more serious cases), and everyone inbetween.

Think of your favorite teacher so far and what you liked about them. Sometimes, simple things we often like to say can't be discriminated against are the things we psychologically are more comfortable with.

Was your favorite teacher male or female? Were they older or younger? Are you needing intense aid, simply want some extra assistance, or just are doing this for a requirement? Be willing to communicate with the person and be comfortable with the payments they require, as this may cause some tension later on. Tension never equals learning.

If you find someone you aren't comfortable with, say it. There's not much point in wasting your time or money.

One of the assignments at St. Edward's for freshman is to interview a professor and get to know them on a more personal level. For this assignment, I decided to interview my philosophy professor, and though the meeting did not proceed as the script expected, I learned a lot about my professor, his passions, and general personality. As a result of having this knowledge of him and his past experiences, his lectures are more interesting, I am able to focus on topics much better, and am more willing to participate in discussions.

This type of meeting is something I love to do, as I am pursing a career in therapy/counseling, so learning about others is going to be my daily activity. I loved to be able to learn about him, why he became a professor and gave up past jobs, his family, and general personality.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
-How much attention will you need? Not all tutors are available at your beckoning call.

-How flexible are you, and how flexible do you need your tutor to be? Rarely are tutors only tutoring. They have lives and you do too. Be knowledgeable about times and transportation.

-How willing are you to learn in a new way or be taught? Not everyone will be willing to sit there while you refuse to learn.

-Is money going to be an issue? How about transportation? Be willing to communicate with your tutor upfront about these issues. Normally, they can be worked out.

-Is there something going on that hurts your learning? Life happens. Sometimes, your tutor needs to know these things.

-Are you telling us everything? Maybe there's a struggle due to a past experience, a student in the class, a teacher, etc. Be willing to communicate.

This isn't currently applicable. I am new to professional tutoring, so I am sure we can work something out. I am a college student, so I do not expect to be paid hundreds of dollars, and am relatively flexible as to when payments will be due. If you communicate, I am sure we can work something out.
