About Cristi

I am a college student who attends Wellesley College in MA. I spent a large portion of my high school career tutoring students who were in middle school and elementary school. I also tutored many peers as well.

Throughout high school I tutored many students. I would help them with their homework and teach them new concepts (or help them to understand the topics they were struggling with). I also guided many of my students in developing good study habits by helping them figure out in which ways they learn best as well as help them put together effective study schedules.

Being a student myself, I am able to relate to those I am tutoring and I am very in touch with the ways in which classrooms function at the elementary and middle school level. Just like some of the students I tutor, I know what it is like to be nervous before an exam or how hard it sometimes is to complete assignments while under pressure. However, I have worked on these issues in my own classes and know how to help others improve in these areas.

As I mentioned before, I was a member of various tutoring clubs at my school, spent a lot of time in a kindergarden classroom as a volunteer, was a student TA as a senior for a freshman year class and I was an active member of my school's National Honor Society chapter.

I love helping students reach their full potential and see them grow as learners. So many students are capable of doing great things, but sometimes they just need a little extra help which is ABSOLUTELY ok! I enjoy seeing students celebrate their progress and develop a love for the topics that they once despised

First off, I like to have a conversation with the student about their goals. I want to know what the student looks to achieve and I also like to assess the students strengths and weaknesses. This gives me a good idea of the students level of confidence in the area we are working on and it gives me a good jumping off point. I will also look over some of the worksheets and tests provided to me by the student to get an understanding of how their classroom functions.

Middle school and elementary school students with the expection of a few high school students.

Do not be afraid to ask for help - the more transparent a student is with their concerns and the more questions a student asks, the better the teacher can help them.

During my senior year of high school, I worked with a group of three freshman girls who were struggling in their math class. Over the few months that we worked together, not only did they start to get better at math, but they also started to use better study techniques which elevated their grades and confidence levels. Although our sessions were cut short due to Covid-19, the night before their final exam they sent me a picture of them on zoom together studying. This made me realize that even though I had an impact on their grades and their understanding of Algebra, I had a bigger impact on their overall study habits and this would go beyond their first period math class.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Try to narrow down exactly what concepts you are having trouble with, if this is possible. Also, think about how you feel when you are working through problems and explain this to your teacher.
