About Brandon

I have over 10 years of experience as a tutor, including 2 years as a math specialist at Norwich University's amazing Academic Acheivement Center, and 9 years of experience teaching college level mathematics. In my sessions, the goal is not simply to answer questions a student may have about the material. Rather, the goal is to foster in each student scientifically proven learning strategies and study skills, such as self-testing and active reading (yes, even in a math course!). This ensures that my students grow into more independent learners, able to fully utilize the resources available to them and better master any material in their courses (not just math) through their own study. As the old adage goes, "Teach someone to fish..." (you know the rest!).

I enjoy watching my students achieve insights independently and develop learning strategies as we work through various sessions. It's really a beautiful thing when you see something "click" and observe students growing as learners. There is also just something very fulfilling about actually helping someone who may be struggling through your work.

In terms of education, my most recent degree is a MS in Mathematics from the University of Vermont (no PhD yet; I'm more interested in teaching than in research!). As stated above, I have taught a variety of math courses at the college level starting in 2012. I have over 10 years of experience as a math tutor, including two years as a math specialist at Norwich University's Academic Achievement Center.

About the lesson

One of the main goals of my sessions is to fully utilize the materials available. I recommend students bring their course materials, textbook, classwork, homework, and any graded work, if possible. A laptop or other device that can connect to web resources is also recommended.

Often the best way to start is to look at a current assignment or recently graded assignment that a student has or has had trouble with. We'll then use the resources available to solve problems, figure out where things may have gone wrong, and answer any questions that may come up (trust me, it's better that I don't simply give you the answer!). Like mastering any skill, successful learning does take work, but let's work together to get there!

Details

Each session costs $40 for each full hour. I'm willing to prorate any hour beyond the first (for example, $40 + $20 = $60 for a 90 minute session; however, a 45 minute session would still cost $40).
