About Chase

Hey I’m Chase and I love teaching Math and Spanish! I have a masters I applied mathematics and have been speaking Spanish for over 20 years

I started tutoring math as a high school junior when I was an intern for my swim coach who taught Algebra 1 and Geometry. From there I was a tutor for my teammates at WPI in various advanced math courses while an undergraduate. In graduate school, I was a teaching assistant for Calculus 1 and 2 classes.

I have two degrees in mathematics from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI).

About the lesson

When working with a new student I like to talk to them about their specific goals. I like to work through simpler problems first to see how the student is able to problem solve and ascertain which teaching method may be most effective.

I have worked with students at several different levels including elementary school, middle school, high school, and undergraduate level. The majority of the students I have worked with are high school or college students.

Flexibility, kindness, and patience are all key. A tutor needs to be able to get to the student's level of understanding as best they can. A tutor should not make any assumptions about what the student may know. A tutor also needs to give the students ample opportunities to solve problems on their own even if they make mistakes.

One of my former students (my best friend's daughter) recently got into college. It was a tremendous feeling to see all the progress she has made academically.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I would encourage students to try their best not to let past performance affect their confidence or restrict how open minded they are to the idea that improvement is even possible. I've had many students who had a tough time accepting that math is something they even could understand at all. There is absolutely nothing wrong with not understanding something.
