About Laura

I have been tutoring students (K-11) for 8 years. My 2 years spent as an instructor at a Mathnasium tutoring center have provided me with invaluable experience working with students of all ages and abilities. Prior to working for Mathnasium, I tutored elementary students in reading and math on a volunteer basis for years. I am experienced and proficient in tutoring elementary and middle school math, Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2.

I offer assessments for every level of math to determine which concepts a student has mastered and which concepts they need more practice with. These assessments allow me to create a learning plan catered to their specific needs. I am also happy to work with any materials provided by the student.

Math can sometimes feel daunting for students, but it is my belief that every student should and can feel confident in their mathematics ability. Students often need help mastering the foundational concepts of math that are often covered too quickly or explored in a singular way in the classroom. My goal as a tutor is to listen to and understand each individual student's needs to succeed in their math courses and provide them with the tools necessary to do so. I am here to help you build the skills and confidence you deserve.

I love to see a student start to feel confident in the work they are doing. Many students begin their tutoring experience from an apprehensive state of mind and it shows in your first interactions with them. It is the most fulfilling when you watch a student transform from apprehension to demonstrating understanding of the subject and confidence in their ability to succeed. When students start to believe in themselves you know you are on the right track.

At the beginning of my university experience, I was on track to attend law school following graduation. However, I continuously found myself taking volunteer and paid positions working with children and students. I realized teaching is my passion and working with students to build their confidence in the classroom brings me a sense of great fulfillment.

I have worked and/or volunteered as a math tutor for 8 years now. Most recently, I have worked at a Mathnasium tutoring center for 2 years, developing skills with students of all ages and abilities. Prior to that I volunteered as a math and reading tutor with various organizations over a 5-year period. I also have 3 years of experience in childcare. I was on the advanced math track in junior high and high school, completing AP BC Caluculus as a senior in high school. At the University of Washington, I majored in political science, graduating from the Interdisciplinary Honors Program, and succeeded in college-level Calculus, Statistics and Economics during my time at the university.

About the lesson

The first thing I do when connecting with a new student is listen to their thoughts and feelings revolving around math and their success in the classroom. I want to understand each individual student's needs and goals before I create a learning plan. I offer assessments for every level that will allow me to determine the needs of your student. From this assessment I can create a learning plan catered to your needs and that will focus on the topics you will need to improve upon to succeed in the classroom.

I have worked with students from all backgrounds and of all ages. Many of my students fall on the ADHD and autism spectrums and I enjoy building confidence with these students because I am on the ADHD spectrum and have been able to succeed in the math classroom. I have experience working with students struggling with anxiety and depression who could benefit from the comfort of one-on-one instruction. I specifically love working with students who identify as LGBTQIA+ because I belong to the community as well. Lastly, I am aware that girls and young women are sometimes made to feel intimidated when it comes to succeeding in math, but I am here to help them break through that barrier if it is holding them back.

Look for a teacher who feels right for your experiences and needs. It is not always the most experienced or the most advanced in mathematics who can provide you with the best learning experience. You and your teacher are people outside of the math classroom and your life experiences can impact your math experiences. Sometimes the teacher for you is the one with the most advanced math skills, but sometimes its the one who understands how the personal effects the academic.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Why. Why am I struggling with math? Is it because a specific topic doesn't make sense to me? Is it because I didn't fully understand a concept that seems to be sticking around longer than I thought it would? Is it because I have been struggling outside of the classroom and got behind? Is it because I am scared to ask the questions I need to ask in the classroom setting? Or am I doing well at math, but I see potential for getting ahead?
