About James

In 2017 I moved from landscape and wildlife photography, which I had done as part of my career in salmon recovery, to shooting fashion, environmental portraiture, skate, and concerts. I particularly love environmental portraiture, which captures people doing the things they love, in the settings they live in. My focus particularly is on capturing the beautiful hidden faces that my clients hide from the world, and which their loved ones cherish.

I gradually fell in to teaching. It began by answering questions from family members (often after inadvertently blurting out something like "if only the focus had been on the front eye," or "this might look amazing if you..." Same thing in forums and on facebook groups.

Answering discreet questions about how to take better pictures quickly fell in to full-scale instruction.

About the lesson

The first thing I do is a basic assessment of the student's knowledge, experience, and equipment. A student with a point-and-shoot camera or smartphone and little formal experience, who just wants to take better pictures of her dog is going to start in a different place and be interested in different material than someone shooting with a full-frame DSLR having taken several years of photography in hogh school or college and wanting to shoot fashion.

I have worked with retirees wanting to take pictures of their pets, grandchildren, and bird feeders.

I have taught you g professionals who bought an expensive DSLR camera at Costco, expecting it to make their photos amazing, and realizing that they were not (figuratively) in Kansas anymore.

I have taught stay-at-home moms looking for a creative outlet.

I have taught people hoping to make a career out of their photographs.

While it is tempting to hire a teacher based on their portfolio alone (and I hope that the quality of MY portfolio is one of the thongs that helps you choose ME), there is a factor that I consider to he at least as important: communication styles and strategies. Make sure that the teacher you choose communicates in a way and with language that speaks to you. For example, I use a lot of analogies and visualizations when I teach to help get some of the very complex ideas actoss quickly. If that is a style of communicating that doesn't really work for you, don't choose me.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
It's important to have a solid idea of where you want to end up and what you want to achieve. I al going to give a completely different set of lessons to someone who just wants to photograph the birds at the feeder in their backyard than I would to someone with dreams if becoming a professional concert photographer.

Details

Online (Zoom.us or Facebook Messenger) Virtual Lessons:

I charge $80 for the initial get-to-know-you lesson and assessment (approximately 1 hr), and $55 for each 30-40 minute (online) lesson after that.

In-Person Lessons (COVID Pricing):

In-person lessons are $105 for the initial assessment/lesson and $75 for each 30-40 minute lesson after that.

Portfolio Review and Constructive Criticism:

I charge $55 for an online review of up to 25 images (online only).
