About Robert
Hi,
I'm a friendly and experienced tutor who has guided students from 4th grade through college to succeed in their math and science courses.
With my help, one of my students scored well enough to skip a grade in math earlier this year. Current students include a 4th grader, a 6th grader, a high school junior, and a college freshman.
I often create custom "how-to" slide decks that help students tackle difficult concepts. I can also create focused test prep "sprints" that enable students to quickly boost their knowledge and skills ahead of a looming exam.
I've been tutoring in Northern California since 2019 and have taught at SF State and American University in Washington DC. I've also coached age group springboard divers in NJ and Louisiana to compete in national competitions.
One of my particular strengths is crafting custom practice problems based on my experience designing and writing over one hundred interactive modules for leading educational publishers such Pearson Education and Houghton-Mifflin. This experience supercharged my ability to identify how best to help a student work through common misconceptions to achieve higher test scores.
My educational background includes two degrees from MIT (BS/MS Chem. Engineering) and a Masters in Journalism from UC Berkeley.

Each tutoring experience will be tailored to the student's needs but these are some of the steps that will occur as part of the natural flow of identifying a tutoring plan.
1. Subject area focus
2. Course syllabus (required - I need to know how the student will be assessed)
3. Styles of learning (talking through issues, worked problems, assignments, open discussion)
4. Overall objective (targeting a specific assessment, grounding in subject area, stimulating curiosity, etc.)
5. Duration of tutoring (short focused effort, longer and deeper exploration of content domain)
I have taught a broad range of students from high school to college undergrad and graduate students.
My many instructional design programs have helped tens of thousands of students learn content covered in middle school, high school, and college courses.

I presented a talk at the Connected Learning conference held at the MIT Media Lab last summer about the Factitious news game I co-designed, which has been played more than 750K times at schools around the country (factitious.augamestudio.com). The game challenges players to tell if an online story is real or fake. I also designed the Factitious game platform that streamlines the addition of new articles and modification of each game level.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I'm a huge fan of research, preparation, and planning. Here are some concrete steps you can take before asking a teacher for guidance:
1. Re-read the course syllabus closely. Note any topics you think you need to improve.
2. Re-read your graded assignments and note any teacher feedback you didn't quite understand.
3. From steps 1 & 2, create a list of questions to ask the teacher.
4. Re-organize your list of questions to focus on your priorities. If all questions are equally important, list them in chronological order.
5. Try to get a good night's sleep the day before you meet with your teacher.
