About Pablo
As a tennis professional, I aim to simply give what the clientele wants. With an agreed upon goal, we can move forward to accomplish the individual's needs, whether it's to better a particular stroke from a technical standpoint, or an adult to move up the competition ladder, all the way to getting a beginning junior to the college tennis level.
My method of teaching technique steps out of the status-quo basics, and gives the student a glimpse as to how the pros do it, and they are methods that create more racquet speed (topspin), and therefore much more ball control. After all, if you're not first making your opponents play--like the "defense" in all of sports--you're not making them compete.
Accomplishing goals together with the clients. If the client gets what he or she wants, then I naturally get what I want. I very much also like to coach the psychological battle that happens on the court, and teaching students how to take that away from being a battle with self, and redirecting it to the other side of the net.
Especially with the young folks, these techniques and learned mindsets can enhance how they deal with life in general, from into the classroom, all the way through the interview room, and even into something like management (or parenting!). After all, confidence and attitude is [almost] everything.
In the summer of 1991 I started giving clinics as a 16-year-old in Redlands, CA for a group at Ford Park. In the summer of 1993, in between my freshman and sophomore college years, I was the solo coach for a group of summer camp kids (8 hours a day of tennis and swimming) at the Palmer Tennis Academy in Pasasdena, Calif. From there I got more and more into private lessons, and such.
I took my first tennis lesson in 1981, played junior tennis in Southern California, and later played college tennis where I was awarded All-American status in NCAA Div II (1995). During this time, I was also teaching lessons and have been ever since.
I worked in Key Biscayne Florida as a teaching pro in 1998 for a year and then in back in Southern California (Newport Beach, Irvine, Redlands, San Bernardino), until I came to Kansas City in 2005 to work with Kansas City United Tennis (KCUT).
In 2008-2016 I was the director of tennis at Clayview Country Club and started the Clayview Tennis Academy, which graduated 17 players to the college level in an area that had very little tennis, and these kids were essentially home grown--and many of them from small towns.
In 2016, I came back to work with KCUT as the director of tennis at the Plaza Tennis Center, and am now indoors at Hilltop Racquet Club.

My typical process depends on the level. If it's a true beginner, I like to start with showing them how to work with certain techniques on the ground strokes to create topspin the very first day so that they learn how to control the ball.
If they're a a lot more advanced, and the technique is pretty sound, then I go into enhancing what they've already got, weather to create more depth, more spin, and/or more power. There are ways to create all three without sacrificing one or the other--and I believe that is a common misconception.
I have worked with everything from the beginning 4-year-old to, the high-school beginner, to the young, college-aspiring junior, to full-blown college players training over the summer, to the beginner and advanced adult. I have also worked with all of these privately and in group fashion.
My advice would be to first find someone you can trust. Then, make sure this individual is going to give you what you want, and not just what they want. In the process, he/she should be able to make training enjoyable, but also be able to get the most out of you at the same time (assuming the goal is to improve as quickly as possible).
I have a few, actually. Sometimes my favorite updates to hear involve my more beginner high schoolers. In the case of the girls, at least--because their season is right after a tennis-packed summer--the results are there and easy to quantify due to the timing. It seems every year I get the news from at least one individual who says "I just beat a girl who beat me 6-0, 6-0 last season". Actually, that happened 4 years in a row, and with 3 different players.
This year, I got a different version of what probably is the same thing. I have three girls from three different part of KC, who played played #15, #13, and #10 on their respective HS teams last year. This year, however--each having only lost 2 seniors ahead of them--they played #7, #6, #2 (the latter could have been #1 but she got rained out the last match before districts closed). All 3 moved up essentially 8 high school spots in just 1 year, training part-time!
I also have a sophomore, who never thought she could make the State Championships, make it this year for the first time, and she placed 4th!
My most proud memory, however, has got to be of an individual who came to me years ago as a 9th grader. This individual was not happy with his/herself body-wise, and very inexperienced at tennis.
Long story short, this individual got a tennis scholarship and went on to play college, but it wasn't until then that I had realized the impact the tennis had. You see, throughout middle school and HS, this individual was bullyed, and all other tennis coaches who were approached told this person that there was no real tennis hope.
I remember these conversations. What I didn't know, until I got a letter from this individual in college, was that my academy years before was the last straw; that, after so many attempts to make life beter, that he/she was going to..well.."do something", if this didn't work out.
Today, this person is a lean fighting machine who also motivated the entire family to strive for more, and the rest is history. It wasn't until this letter that I truly realized why I had to keep doing what I do, and I can only thank God for this opportunity and His guidance.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
For me at least, I always ask my students, "What do you really want to achieve?" And, in the process, I ask them to try and not simply tell me what they think they can do, because that's how we're all good at limiting ourselves. But that's also why we need a coach to achieve what we truly want.

Pablo's relationship with my son was the key to his success. He didn't just teach tennis skills but was able to individual my son's regime to bring out the best in him and thus his game. He took my son, who had never played tennis his Freshman year, to a state medalist, 3 time District champion and now a collegiate tennis player. You can't go wrong with Pablo when it comes to his care, skill and guidance of your child.
Coming into the Kansas City area not knowing anyone that plays tennis, Pablo connected me to others of similar skill. He also helped me bump my game up to the next level and continues to do so to this day. He knows every aspect of the game!
Pablo is a fantastic coach. We are so happy to have him working with our son. He not only teaches him technique, but works with him on the mental side of the game. He is so motivating! Fives stars plus for Pablo!!!
Amazing! He is well respected in the tennis community and came highly recommended for the reason why we initially started beginner level tennis with him. Now our Daughter is wanting to continue playing tennis into college. She had never picked up a racket until a little over 2 years ago. Very happy with quality of lessons and the programs he custom designs.
Very Personable. Connects with the player and looks at strengths as well as what can be improved the most in the shortest amount of time. Focuses on improvement
Pablo always challenges me physical and mentally with a friendly and personable style. He makes me want to be better!
Pablo did a good job of providing instruction on technique as well as strategy, while keeping in mind my strengths.
Pablo has been an outstanding tennis coach and mentor for three of our children. He motivates them by his coaching methods as well as encouraging them to set both short and long term goals.
Great mentor and coach that understands the "big picture".
