About Zinnia
I am a Biology tutor with 9 years of experience and an MRes in Biology. I have taught over 350 students from GCSE through to postgraduate level. My research background means I engage with Biology as a living, developing science and bring current discoveries into my teaching as context for the foundational content students need to master. My Biology teaching has been refined across nine years into a highly efficient approach that addresses the specific misconceptions and knowledge gaps that recur consistently at each level of study. I begin every new student relationship with a structured misconception audit, asking students to explain their understanding of key concepts in their own words, because the precise nature of a student's incorrect understanding often differs significantly from a general lack of knowledge and requires a different corrective approach. My approach to cell biology builds the molecular basis of cellular processes carefully before addressing the larger physiological and ecological consequences, because students who understand why cells behave as they do at the molecular level make sense of higher-level Biology far more readily. Genetics teaching in my studio is always connected to its evolutionary and ecological consequences — students understand not just how genes are inherited but why the mechanisms of inheritance produce the population-level patterns that natural selection acts upon. I teach students the specific evaluative language that Biology mark schemes reward — the use of precise technical vocabulary, the comparison of experimental conditions, the acknowledgement of limitations — because examination performance depends as much on communication skill as subject knowledge. Practical skills including microscopy interpretation, data analysis, and experimental design are addressed explicitly because these form an increasing proportion of advanced Biology assessments. My teaching goal is a student who thinks rigorously, communicates precisely, and genuinely loves the subject.
