About Ben

Hi! My name is Ben and I recently graduated with a First-Class degree in Economics from the University of Exeter.

I love Economics because it is the application of mathematical concepts to the real world - as a self-confessed number enthusiast I find it fascinating that, for example, a set of equations can precisely predict what a given person will buy in their weekly shop, or how calculus can inform a country on whether to trade internationally or not.

I have been tutoring for over 2 years now and I greatly enjoy it. Many of my students have exceeded their predicted grades and gone on to do things they previously thought impossible, such as attending their dream university - these moments make tutoring truly rewarding to me.

Maths is a crucial aspect of learning and has countless applications in other subjects. Hence, I take the development of each student very seriously and strive to provide them with the greatest return on investment they can achieve.

I aim not only to provide students with a thorough mathematical understanding, but also to share my passion for maths with them. I will help my students improve by making maths enjoyable and accessible while still ensuring they get all the knowledge and skills they need!

Having only completed my university exams a handful of months ago, I can remember the pressure that exams can bring and I aim to alleviate some of this pressure with informative lessons that inspire confidence!

My other passions besides maths include sport and music: both listening to it and playing it

I tutor school Mathematics at all levels - from KS3 all the way up to A Level Further Maths. I cater to all abilities and levels of understanding, and as such I tailor my lessons to each individual student.

I firmly believe that every student has the potential to succeed at Maths, however the way Maths is taught in a traditional school environment benefits only a small portion of students. Each student learns at a different pace and benefits from different styles of teaching; I tailor my lessons around individual needs.

I believe that the learning process for Maths comes in 2 stages: understanding and cementing that understanding with repeated application. I structure my lessons around this teaching philosophy.

I first ensure the student understands a given topic up to the level required by the syllabus. Many students can struggle with a certain area of Maths until it clicks with them and they suddenly 'get' it. I will ensure this 'click' happens for all concepts by breaking them down into small, logical steps.

I then run through progressively harder practice questions with them, guiding them when required, until they are confident in answering even the most devilish problems.

I measure progress by setting the student exam-style questions in order to truly test their understanding and prepare them for the real thing. I will revisit any concepts that they haven't yet mastered.

My lessons are typically 1 or 2 hours long. Depending on the student and the way in which they learn, shorter or longer sessions can be more beneficial, especially when dealing with more complex topics.

I have been tutoring for over 2 years now, working with a wide range of students and abilities, including mature students. I have particular experience in tutoring students with disabilities and neurodivergent students, including those with dyslexia, autism, ADHD and blindness.

I have a recently graduated from the University of Exeter with First-Class Honours in BSc Economics, following A*s in Maths and Further Math at A-level and an MAT score of 67.
