  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

I have always loved singing, it's just great fun. I started when I was at school, and have continued to do so since!
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

I love all genres of music, classical, opera, rock, 70s, 80s, 90s pop and jazz. That said, if I listen to one genre, album or song too much then I have to have a break from it but, when I come back to it, I fall back in love with the piece all over again! It's particular bad when I do a run of opera performances. I may have spent up to 4 months singing that one role, and so I really need a holiday from it, but a year later we are good friends again.
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

Singing is so complex - it cannot be one course. A singer of classical music requires so many skills, to name a few:

    Vocal technique

    Artistry

    Foreign languages.

    Acting skills

    Stagecraft

    Music theory

Not forgetting other vital skills such as:

    Business acumen

    Accounting skills

    Marketing and self-promotion.

    Self-care of your body/mind/Instrument

I love teaching each and every facet of singing. In my opinion this is what makes teaching singing so exciting, there is so much varied content to introduce and explain, and each bit is equally as important as the others.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

For the many reasons I have described, singing is by far the most complicated, you have to be incredibly well rounded with many skills.

In singing your instrument is your body and as we age, our bodies change, and therefore our voices change. An instrumentalist does not have to contend with this. And let's not even start on the effect of illness on the voice.

They say it takes ten years to make a professional singer. You could be a qualified doctor with several years experience by then! This career has to be a labour of love.
  • What are your keys to success?

Practice, practice, practice. There are no short cuts unfortunately.... trust me, I've looked!

Knowing the theory of singing doesn't help one sing. One needs to build vocal muscles, mind-body connections and perfect coordination through practice.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

The three tenors, Pavarotti, Domingo and Carreras. Think of all the nerdy conversations we could have! Think of the anecdotes! Think of what I could learn!
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

I was asked with just two weeks notice to understudy a role at Glyndebourne Opera, and so I spent the two weeks furiously preparing the role, and memorising it. On my first day I nervously went to the opera house to watch the rehearsals, which had been under way for several weeks. To my horror the guy I was covering was ill, and so I was called to the stage to sing the role in front of an extremely famous (and feared) Director and Conductor.

To this day I'm relieved that I prepared so well. I sang the role with only minor slips, and I even managed to do some acting!

The tenor I was covering was never ill again, so that was my one moment in the sun!
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

Students frequently remark on my ability to clearly explain concepts about singing. I will explain an exercise, and I will explain why this exercise is important, and what sensations one should be trying to feel and maximise in the exercise. Exercises are only helpful if you know why you are doing them and what benefit you will gain.

I have learnt much from my singing experiences and am fully aware of the highs and lows. I hope to help you find your true voice!
