About Alex

Like most teenagers, I circled around many different subjects, interests and hobbies and eventually settled on Biology. I got a 9 at GCSE, and now after really enjoying my A level (getting an A) and loving my degree, I know it's often hard to find areas of the subject interesting, or if they do find it interesting are met with an uninspiring syllabus. I can talk to students casually, so that they feel at ease and able to say exactly how they’re feeling about a topic and aren’t afraid of being embarrassed; but I stay highly professional at the same time and know that my goal is to push the student so that they can achieve and learn more than they have done so far. I want students to know how to feel inspired to enjoy the subject, which is key for them wanting to do their best, and I can put what they learn in wider context and show them real world biology outside of their textbook.

About the lesson

With one hour lessons, I use teaching worksheets to start a discussion and explore what the student knows and from there I can guide them. I don’t just want to teach how to remember, but also how to think about answering questions and broadening the student’s interest in Biology. Being a student myself, I am very familiar with how many GCSE students like to learn and can draw up casual but respectful conversations which help them to feel comfortable. The GCSE syllabus usually lacks any inspiration and context for what you learn, so I want to try to project my own knowledge of these aspects and my love for Biology, so that they not only understand the content, but understand why certain areas are important and where this leads, and of course to enjoy learning it. My lessons are for both confident students who want an extra push and ones who are struggling and need a boost of confidence to help them get the grades they want.
