About James

I am an experienced Maths tutor with a strong engineering background, currently studying for a Master’s degree in Marine Engineering at University College London (UCL). I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and have spent the last six years working professionally as an engineer, applying mathematics daily in real-world, high-responsibility environments. I specialise in GCSE-level Maths, helping students not only improve their grades, but also build confidence, logical thinking, and problem-solving skills that will support them far beyond exams.
Maths is a tool that can be used to identify and solve real world problems, as such it is important to understand the application as much as the method.

About the lesson

My teaching style is structured, patient, and confidence-building. I understand that many students struggle with maths not because they lack ability, but because they lack clarity or belief in themselves.
I focus on:
Breaking topics down into clear, manageable steps.
Explaining concepts in simple, logical language.
Reinforcing learning through exam-style questions.
Teaching students how to think, not just memorise methods.

The first lesson is used as an introduction and assessment, so that I can understand where the student is at. Following lessons will be used to work through areas within the syllabus as required. Lessons begin with a starter (5-10 mins), following this there will be a period of taught content (15-20mins), I will then set some questions for the student that will build on the taught content (25-30mins), finally there will be a recap and homework set. After each lesson I produce a short report on what was covered in that lesson.

Lessons are conducted in person or online.
