About James

I am an enthusiastic, friendly, and adaptable tutor, and a lover of geography, environmental science, and geology!

I hold a PhD in Environmental Science, with a focus on volcanic hazards. I am interested in both the physical and human aspects of geoscience, i.e., how the Earth behaves and affects our lives, and how we in turn learn to best live with the dynamism of Earth.

I have spent the last 6 years working as an Associate Tutor at the University of East Anglia, and helped to design and lead public and schools-based science events to teach people about volcanoes. I have joined SuperProf because I want to continue sharing my enthusiasm for geography/geology, and I get a lot of enjoyment satisfaction from helping people learn and understand about the planet we live on together.

Aside from my academic background, I am a musician, woodworker, keen cook, and lover of the outdoors.

About the lesson

I want to work flexibly with you to tailor my tutoring style to meet your needs. Whether you want to follow a curriculum and be led by me, or you have specific parts of a course you need extra help with, I am eager to help however I can. So, set up an initial session and let's make a plan to work together!

My interdisciplinary background means that I am comfortable tutoring both human and physical geography, earth/environmental science, and geology, as well as more technical skills such as scientific Python and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). I have 6 years of experience tutoring undergraduate/postgraduate students on a range of geoscience courses as as well as leading school-based science workshops. So, I am happy to help you whether you are doing your GCSEs or you are taking on a Masters degree.

I also acquired my undergraduate degree (Geography, BA) at the University of Cambridge, so I can help with personal statements and interview preparations for university applications.
