About Avery

Hi, my name is Avery and I'm a recent graduate from the University of Edinburgh, with a first class BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences. I have been tutoring for two years alongside my studies, mainly through Zoom and Skype, although sometimes in person. I have always recieved positive feedback from my students and from the parents of the students. I have tutored a range of ages (from 9 to 18) in a range of subjects (Biology, Chemistry, Maths, Physics, Economics, & English).
Not only has the feedback been about improved grades or good exam results, but also about their confidence in themselves. I have found that especially since the disruption to education COVID-19 caused, the confidence of kids in the classroom has gone down, and I try to help with this.

Having gone through both the IB Diploma and GCSEs, I have a good understanding of the syllabus and how the qualifications function. My higher level subjects were Biology, Chemistry and Economics, and the first two I still study regularly in my degree. I grew up bilingual and am fluent in Spanish, so I am comfortable tutoring in this up to GCSE level.

I have tutored A-Level and Scottish National 5s despite not having taken these myself. However, I have studied the syllabuses to understand them and feel confident in tutoring these as well.

I have always enjoyed working with children and this year I was the Training Officer for an entirely student-run charity in Edinburgh. I have worked closely with most of the 130 children who we support over the 4 years I have been with this organisation, and have done additional volunteer tutoring for those that have needed educational support. Besides this, in my role as Training Officer, I come up with creative ways to teach the volunteers what they need to know to work with the kids.

I am able to provide references from past students and parents. Please message to request these.

My lessons are typically an hour long. I have always used the approach of student led teaching in my classes. I let the student tell me what they need to work on, and we go at their pace, uncovering new topics to improve. I always want the students to feel comfortable and able to ask me to explain something again. I adapt my lessons as I learn more about their learning style, being creative in my approach until we find what works best for them. I want my students to go away from the lessons feeling confident in their own abilities, and excited about having finally understood something.
